Canadian tire airguns

I looked at three CanTire stores in BC, was not impressed, prices were seemingly higher than they should be, and the airguns were mediocre IMO.

At Walmart, they had two really decent airguns: a Winchester .177 with beautiful wood and a 4x scope for just $120, and a Crossman Phantom .22 pellet 495fps, for just $99. I bought the Phantom, a scope to go with it. Its tough, handles nicely, good trigger, built to last a long time (except all these new air rifles use plastic "iron sights" that will break quick). It's a tackdriver, and I've been stocking up on hunting conicals for it since then! Same store has 500 hollow pellets for $12, and 175 pointy hunters for $5.50, so about 3 cents per shot!

Whatever scope you get, MAKE SURE it was made for airguns...the spring vibration will kill a firearm scope, because the forces are opposite direction. I got a $40 Walther brand scope, looks to be exactly the same as a Beeman scope from Walmart and other places. Very clear, happy with it, and it's nice to have the Walther logo on it even if its just their name on a Chinese scope (like the Beeman).

IMO you wont do as well at CanTire, and to do better than me, go check the true airgun enthusiasts.

I second the .22 Phantom. Check out my squirrel problem thread to see how it performs. It's a good buy and I paid $109 at Walmart 2 years ago.

RWS/Diana 24 is a much better gun than the Spanish + Chinese junk out there.CZ 630 or 631 great too..................

By the sounds of it you don't want something that would require a PAL. Not sure, but I own a benjamin nitro piston pellet gun. Its friggen awsome, it'll take down various small game if I want, its beyond accurate, over-all i just love it. All the fun of a gun, without the noise!

Here's a link to the one I have, its just a touch over your budget and you can use it for so much more!

Get a multi-pump. Do not get a break-down one, do not get CO2.

The multi pumps will last you well over 20 years. Dont let them dry out, as with any pellet gun, keep them oiled (dump the oil in any spot you can every so often).

As they get weaker you simply pump more times to achieve the same FPS.

Even when the do start to leak pressure you've got 10 seconds or so to shoot so thats not bad.....a decade or two later.

The break down ones you only have 1 "pump" and this gets weak quite quickly. You can likely swap out the spring or stretch the spring but thats just annoying.

I like the Crossman handgun they have, single shot .22cal, its a keeper. Been around forever and has lots of power (friend used to rabit hunt withone in the 80s) http://reviews.canadiantire.ca/9045/0754620P/no-american-classic-pump-air-pistol-reviews/reviews.htm. (get it in .22 cal if u can)

There is a rifle version too, even better. This looks like one similar........ my money is on this one. good reviews too.

I used pellet guns as a kid for rabbit hunting...very young......and it was these multipumps that won out, and still work 20 years later.

Bit of a thread jack here. I've never owned a pellet gun that's "permit required" and I've always wondering what permit they're talking about! Where do you get said permit? And would they sell me a "permit required" pellet gun if I have a PAL/RPAL?

They mean a PAL when they say permit.

If you already have one, then you have no worries.

I looked at the Lebaron site and I think they have pretty darn good prices and if you can figure out how to get around thier site a not bad collection. I wish I had seen them sooner.

a few years ago I purchased a Crossman Challenger 2000 Co2 air rifle at the CTC in Cambridge ON. I love that gun, it is very accurate and quiet. I only use it for paper punching and was really impressed at how well the peep sights worked on it.
The gun actually handles quite like a single shot AR15, it has a very similar charging handle on it.
I currently have a crappy 4x scope on it and it can shoot single hole groups from 10m as long as I do my part. I have tried a few different brands of pellets but find that it shoots best with Finale Match pellets.

Cheers,
Sean

OP What did you end up getting? I bought another Slavia a 624 for my kid. Brand new in box ( sitting since 1970's). They are hard to beat

I never said that there was anything wrong with being into airguns. Freak, I bet you that the first ever rifle that most us got was an airgun and that is exactly why I need a new one lol.

hey i didnt put you down about anything all i said is a pellet gun is what it is. they are fun to shoot. and if you look at the cabelas website they have some nice ones. i just personally wont buy from ct again unless they bring back the backpacker .22 air rifle 495 fps.
