Cooper .284WIN vs .280AI

Hello everyone. I need some valued opinions on this one.

I am planning on ordering/purchasing a Cooper M52 Excalibur soon. I was all decided on a .280 AI (SAAMI spec).

Then, I was told Cooper is going to be chambering the same rifle in a .284 Win.

Which one??

.284 Winchester or a .280 Ackley Improved?

Need help with the caliber choice.

I will be using the rifle for mainly deer, and bigger game.

I'd go 280 AI between the two especially since you want to shoot 160's. 7mm Rem Mag is a good option too and will outrun the Ackley with all bullet weights

I think the .280AI will be the winner.

A belted magnum 7mm in a Cooper would be faster no question. The Model 56 is just a bit over my price range unfortunately.
 
MSRP difference according to Cooper's website is $900 US, not sure what Clay would charge difference, but it's probably close to that.

Having purchased the same rifles in both model 52, and 56 from Clay, it's not all that far off $900.
 
the only pro for the 284 is if you put in a short action
the con you will lose fps
i have had both and would prefer the 280ai. you can load very close to the speed of a 7 mag/7saum/wsm.
 
For the $900 difference for a Magnum I don't think you're giving up much velocity going with the .280AI.Mine loves 160gr Accubonds. Mur

Absolutely! I sold a custom rem 700 in .280AI to build a .284win for the simple fact that I wanted a short action rifle.
The debate about short vs. long action is a whole other story though! ;)

As was stated earlier if the Cooper runs both calibers off of the same action {long} it's a no-brainer...go with the .280AI.

No fireforming, competes for most accurate LR cartridge of all time and is arguably even bettering its 6.5-284 sibling as a long range cartridge. Also one of the most efficient cases available.

That said, for hunting, the .280 AI's likely slightly more useful on paper, real world they'll both do the same job superbly.

All true. I won't have to fireform using Nosler 280AI brass.

The only problem I have now is making sure I get the correct dies.

There is a couple of different 280AI's out there.

The original P.O Ackley and the SAAMI spec version.

I've been told the Cooper is SAAMI spec.
