"OK" I am looking for some advice, I have owned alot of hand guns in my day like so many of you, shooting for sport and play, but I have been resently reminded that each of us needs to be prepare (No worries, but could have been really bad) So I am asking you for help. Looking for a hand gun for self defence (In My Home) (If I ever need it!!!!) Need a recomendation to serve the purpose. Would like the solution for low light conditions as well. Thanks for your time in advance......

The only handgun you can use in Canada for self defense is the one on the Police Officer's hip. When you need one, it should be there just in time to confirm your corpse as being dead.

Watch a few videos of Ken Hackathorn and of cause Massad Ayoob to get the idea.

I don't need lectures, I was being truthful....My mistake for asking the question.....

As long as its reliable and you're comfortable(as in intimately comfortable) with its function/operation it doesn't matter. I don't like the dark so I have a light in my hand and one on my guns, so I don't get too scared or trip on something.;)

honest answer, any gun with a light rail and attached weapon light like a surefire x300 or tlr-1 or M3.... in any resonable caliber, 9mm/40/45.

If I was allowed I would prefer a glock 17 with nightsites and a Surefire X200 attached with a bladetech paddle holster for weapon/light combo.....

XD-m, just a grip and trigger safety, no fumbling to hit a saftey switch when seconds count. If it were me, I would be looking for something without a thumb safety for that reason and there are others. Any caliber will work fine but I would stick with a pistol as you get more rounds loaded at one time. A laser is also aa good thing to have as the sight of a laser on ones chest will very likely end the situation without the need to fire a shot. The light/laser combo is a good idea too. Just my two bits

these are the kinda posts that get flamed and to the original poster, c'mon this is the kinda sh@t that gives pistol users a bad rap.100% of the responses are going to be from peoples mouths who have never needed to use a firearm in self defence and are getting home defence tips from youtube.Try some kung fu lessons. The last i looked you live in canada... not the province of Kandahar. No matter how hard your hood is, nothing a nice lock and an alarm system can't fix.

Next time you register your personal defence weapon system, run that by the CFO so we can get people like you to do the right thing and turn your paranoid owning firearms in. Lay off the 6 oclock news and if things are that bad in your area where you need to "cap some @ss in your sleep" then rent some chuck norris videos and practice high kicks. I will always flame these posts. Shame on all how respond with advice on pistols for home defence:HR:

Shame on you for being a quisling and bowing to get you and your family killed when you had the tools at hand to stop it.

there is nothing illegal about keeping an "unloaded" properly secured handgun at the ready with a loaded magazine close by, there is no canadian law that forbids the usage of a firearm to protect one selfs life or the lives of your loved ones....

when your family is laying on the ground bleeding out because it took the cops 10 minutes to respond to your 911 call, and an additional 8-10 for the paramedics to arrive on scene and the scene to be determined safe, well then you may rethink your stance.

seriously, it is people like you that have given us this nanny state where we expect to be protected by a reactionary police force.... man the #### up and take control of your own self protection.

Answer to your question: Any handgun in 9MM or above you know is reliable and you shoot well is a good choice.

Realistic answer: Use a shotgun, a very fudd looking shotgun. Because defending your home with a scary black rifle or a handgun (God forbid!) will not do you any good in court. Should we have to worry about how badly the government will buttrape us for defending ourselves? Of course not, but matter of fact is, we have to.

If you really want to use a handgun to defend yourself, throw it in your waistband and grab your shotgun first, at least your pistol will be there if you really need it, and if you didn't, the crown will have a hell of a time proving it left your safe.

Again, I wish these weren't issues, but they are. It's the world we live in, and yeah, it sucks.
