Mossberg AR 22Cal

There are tonns of reviews, most will tell you to just look them up, I however own one and have an order on a flat top model.
Now for the pros/cons on the gun IMO,
Pros - Cost, weight, 25 round in a mag, cheaper mags, bolt on most AR goodies.
Cons - Plastics feel, not a wonderful mag release, charging handle is fake, unlike the M&P22, flat top not out yet, mounting an optic on the handle means over 4 inch barrel/optic difference. I need to find a cheek riser because my cheek doesn't touch the stock when using my HD7 red dot.
Last con is the stock iron sights. Good for quick shots but no close groups.

I love this gun, if you do buy one, try tonns of different ammo. Mine likes american eagle. Also when the flat top comes out, the carry handle will sell for pennies I think!
I most likely will be selling mine.

It's called the Mossberg Tactical.

Some really like them. They have a good .22 action and barrel housed inside a plastic shell. 25 round mags.

Some say they give the impression of being a cheap, lightweight toy, like something you'd get at Walmart in the toy section with a red muzzle.

I read a bunch of reviews on them. I do like the looks of them, so I seriously considered one. Some say they've fired thousands of rounds with barely a hiccup. Others say they are a total Jammomatic, especially if you hold the mag when firing. I have read the same thing about virtually every Tacticool .22 out there. All of them are very ammo sensitive and you have to try different types before settling on what the rifle prefers.

There is a new Flat Top model coming out soon. I was told to expect them in February hopefully. If you want one of them might be worth waiting for that, most prefer that setup for optics.

Ultimately I decided against the Mossberg Tactical, opted to go for a Squires Bingham/Armscor M1600 when I belatedly found out they were still for sale brand new. (real wood stock, steel receiver)

BTW, the Armscor is about the same price as the Mossberg Tactical or even a bit cheaper depending on the dealer. If you can manage it I'd suggest holding both of them before deciding what to do. On one thread a poster mentioned changing his mind about buying a Mossberg after handling it.

* On the Armscor, to mount optics, slide the carry handle off the receiver grooves, slide on a B-Square Picatinny rail adapter, then install the optics of your choice. Same location as on a flat top.

I witnessed first hand, when a case ruptured, and the magazine was blown out of one of these guns. As well, the bullet was left lodged in the barrel. The owner was not impressed.

Bad things can happen to any gun, just look at the MK22. Again, like most will say, if you want plastic (a toy), buy the mossberg. If you want metal, but almost anything else. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Another option soon will be the Kal-tec Su22. FYI 4 lbs gun!!!!

Good thing is we have lots of tacticool .22s to choose from.
I had lots of jams with everything but Stingers and American Eagle. However some will say Blaszers shoot fine out of it. Wasn't the case with mine but every gun is different.
 
My kid loves his and other than choosing the right ammo for it, it's been flawless. Even dirty.

25 round mags that look like the "big boy" ones and low initial cost make this a gun for most peoples' rimfire collection.
 
As for waiting for the flat top to come out, I wouldn't hold my breath. How long have we all been saying, "just wait a bit longer"? Months now. If they weren't out for christmas, they won't be coming out anytime soon, IF at all. Why would I say that? They don't even have the flat top model on the Mossberg website, just the original tactical with the fixed and adjustable stock. I can't figure out why Mossberg isn't pushing to get these out, especially if it's true that Cabelas has ordered 800 of them. The demand is there, but where is the product? Obviously I don't know any more then the rest of you guys, but for them to not even have it listed on their site anymore, makes me wonder.
 
Cabela's in the states doesn't have them listed on their web site either. Makes me wonder too. i think I might take the money I put away for this and buy something else until they come out.
 
I agree, however if a shipment does make it and you don't have an order in, chances are low of getting one in the store. IMO
I can't wait for the flat top, but I'm too chicken to cut mine up!

Cabelas.ca has both the AR-Style and Flatop versions with fixed or adjustable stocks listed on the website but they are backordered.
 
I know their back ordered.
I've had one on order since Nov 10.
Your about 2 months behind on this topic. Most of the people chiming in have been following these postings for a while now. LOL

I was just letting everyone know about Cabela's in the states isn't even listing them.

Everyone is patiently waiting for them to arrive.
We should start a new thread and everyone can guess a date when they will start showing up at stores. LOL
 
Why wait for the flat top?? Just hack it off yourself.

Ive tested it chopped down and I can shoot quarter sized targets easily at 70 yards over and over all day!!!

Doesn't look that bad either.

When you chop the front sight just rotate the quad rail 180 degrees and looks nearly flush. I still need to do some filling in on the gaps but goin well.

Ill keep ya guys updated with my build.
 
I think Grove might just have the temporary solution until the "New Flat Tops" come out. I still want the new Flat Top because it has the shorter barrel and shorter forend grip.
Keep us updated. Lots of pics if possible.
 
Nice job on that Grove, saw that on another thread.

What is the rail mounted to where the carry handle was removed?
Generic rail with screws going through plastic receiver to underside?

How well does it colimate to bore? (in the pic it looks very parallel)

Yup generic rail off of one of my airsoft rifles. 2 holes drilled in top of receiver and 2 bolts inside the plastic body holding it firm.

Rail is nearly perfectly parallel with the bore, that said the rail I have has a curve in the underside do with tension its just slightly off, but use my laser bore sighter and it shoots perfect!!

Sure is ugly right now but it works god damned perfect!.

Best ammo I've found so far is Federal Champion 525 Value Pack, 38grain hollowpoint.

Large round nose ammo tends to act up, the pointier stuff feeds with maybe one failure out of the entire box (poorly seated bullet).
