Great deals to be had for budget minded precision shooters...

Interesting, wish it was Howa Varmint with 20" barrel but for $430 you certainly can't complain. Didn't know about the Tikka for $800 either, always wanted one.

Wonder why Howa doesn't have a distributor in Canada, all the rifles seem to come up here from the US ala Weatherby or Legacy.

It IS the Howa Varmint for $430. That's what I'd indicated in my first post.

Yes, I understand that it's a Howa action. Should have been more specific, I was referring to the Legacy Howa Varmint Compact, they have 20" barrels and are .825" at the muzzle as opposed to the 22" .740" of the Weatherby Vanguard HB. Still a great deal no matter how you look at it.

The Howa Varmint I bought in November was the new model in the green Hogue stock, 20" HB, 3-position safety, and the new 2-stage target trigger. Ordered it from Italina Sporting Goods. Price was $599 plus tax & shipping.

They have very nice chassis and other Howa kit available.

Well, I did some snooping for the stuff offered by new supplier and was very impressed with what is available for the Howa 1500, Wby Vanguard SA (not as much for the LA).

Factory det mag bottom "metal" (pretty sure this is molded), det mags for 223 and 308 (no internal sizing listed) 5 and 10rds. Have a Tikka/ Ai 'ish type look to them. All center feed for sure. Bottom part of mag is ribbed which will make extraction easier.

The stuff is factory and will drop into factory inletting for the hinged floor plate. The pricing is DIRT CHEAP. If this stuff works,

Stocks from Bell and Carlson in their tactical and varmint styles. Pretty sure these are all blind stocks though???? hunting styles are in there somewhere.

Hogue too.

timney triggers. Nothing super light from someone like Jewell.

For those looking for something different in the varmint and tactical set up vs the Rem, this brand has some very nice kit.

Visited Legacy Sports and unfortunately, all their 22cal have very slow twists (12) so not much fun for my needs.

Jerry, what's the price of the factory detachable mag kit? Is it available in Canada yet? When I bought my Howa Varmint in November, Italian Sports didn't know about availability or pricing.

Looks like Jerry is pretty excited. I was looking on Roedale Precision's website and there are pages upon pages of custom builds using the Howa 1500 action. I also read some of Pete Lincon's post on the 'Hide and it seems he holds the Howa action in high regards and feels it to be superior to the 700. I believe Roedale makes a dm kit for this action that accepts ai mags as opposed to a proprietery set-up that Howa makes. I may have to get one of these actions and use it in a Roedale Chasis!

I'm not going to bash any brand of rifle because I'm glad that whatever your budget there is something for everyone.
I do however think that when talking about precision rifles if you try to throw a $350 rifle into the mix your are out to lunch and kinda asking for trouble on this forum. Heavy barrel does not always make for good groups but who knows with this one. This discussion should have been posted in the hunting rifle forum, then no one would be hacking anyone and no one would be having to get defensive.
It sounds like a great deal on an entry level rifle that gets you out shooting but to call it a precision rifle may be stretching things a little.
Let's see a range report before we pass judgement on it. I'd like to see some targets showing what it can do at 500 yards.

I guess because the original intent of the thread was to expose more beginners to precision shooting, by getting in with a low cost rig, the post ended up in Precision Shooting. Works for me, I have a nice rig, having read everything here, I would consider a weatherby vanguard in .223 as a nice little plinking gun to add to the collection. Not a precision rig - but it compliments the precision rig as a low cost practice/fun gun.

Personally, I can't get my head around this. This forum is full of varmint rifles form all major manufacturers but I bring up one brand that isn't often put in the spotlight and all of a sudden it isn't considered a precision rifle?

700 SPS Tacticals get mentioned here all the time but all they are is standard heavy barrelled 700's with a cheap aftermarket stock and they're considered precision rifles?

Savage 12FV's, 10FP's, and the like are nothing more than standard varmint rifles with different stocks and they're considered precision rifles?

And the list goes on and on including Tikka, Winchesters to a lesser extent, and others.

I should be able to access these.

Guesstimate that DM trigger guard and 1 mag will be around $125.

trigger guard is on backorder but mags seem to be available.

If there is interest, PM or Email and I will confirm that export is possible.

Thanks,

Jerry

Not a flush fit but a drop in into the factory inletting.

5rds 223 and might be the same shape for 10rds.

Semi transparent polymer. Well priced. No clue to durability.

I bought the DBM and a 5 rd last night, price was $50 for DBM and $50 for mag, all polymer. Drop-in fit with zero drama in the factory hogue stock, mag pops in solid with no wiggle. Mag dissasembles the same as an AK mag, except there is a tab to stop the follower at 5 rds with nearly no wiggle room so you cant insert a fully loaded mag on a closed bolt. The DBM has kind of a cheap feel to it being plastic, time will tell how it holds up. The mags feel nice and solid, not semi-transparent however.
