22lr on coyotes

As to flaming, well let's just say that hasn't been a practice of mine thus far on any forum and like as not I'm much too old to post many incendiary comments anymore.;)

I wish I could say to you that our BC Hunting Regulations are simple to understand, but as a CORE instructor for 22 odd years now, I can attest to the fact that the Regulations portion of the written test has always been what the majority of students struggle with.

Then too, I've lost count of the number of times that either former students or friends have called me - sometimes from the mountain out hunting - with a "Hey Dwayne, what does this really mean when it says........":)

I have shot alot of yotes with my .22's I've never had one go more than a couple of steps. aim for the front shoulder and it does enough damange to the internals to kill them ethically. I don't take the shot if they are farther than 50 yards. Just my experience YMMV.
 
I think most of what I wanted to say has been said. But I'll say my piece too. :p

If you're just out for a walk with the .22 - maybe after a bunny or a bird - and you happen onto a yote, if he's within 75 yards and you have been practicing and you know that you can make a good clean shot, go for it. As it has already been said, a .22 inside of these ranges will quickly and ethically kill a yote.

If, however, you are going on a planned yote hunt, I'd recommend leaving the .22 at home and grabbing a centrefire instead. It'll give you a much better chance of picking off the guy hung up at 200 yards.

That clean, eh? What yardage are you going to with it though and are you using the 17gr poly tipped rounds or the 20gr hollow points?

I'm planning on getting into the yote game this season and been looking at the HMR I've got in my cabinet and thinking it just doesn't quite have the jam on something that large.

Try it you will be shocked. Hit the boiler room. 180 yards is the farthest so far but have no trouble going further if time comes
 
If you plan to use a .22LR vs Coyotes, grab a bayonet. By the time you get close enough to be humane and effective, you might as well just stab them :)

Personally, being a milsurp guy, anything around 6.5X55 Swede Mauser or 6.5X50 Japanese Arisaka and up is good Coyote medicine!
 
I have found that most guys I know that are willing to shoot yotes with a .22LR don't care if they get a clean kill. They are just lobbing lead and laughing. It's just stupid.

Close range and a confident shot, then ya, I'll kill a yote every day of the week with a .22, but like most guys on here have said. If you're going out with the express purpose of killing yodel dogs, then get something bigger. 300 win-mag has been the most fun so far, but not cheap. But I'll throw away a buck or two to watch a running dog get damn near split in half. . .
