well today i was in the woods hunting yotes and as i come around the bend in the trail, something growled at me from a tree. i know this sound weird, odd and was not drinking or anythig, but it scared the s%it out of me. ive been in the woods all my life and have never felt like that before. the growl came from a large pine tree about 20 meters into the tree line on my left. it wasent a bear and i know cougars have been seen in this area in the last few years. so any ideas? i backed off and walked back to my car not looking back very often but my eyes were on stalks looking into the trees for what it may have been.

this is where it happened

45 49'05.09 north
66 50'42.37 west

i usially hunt the other side of hanwell road so this area is new to me. if anyone hunts this area and know anything about what it might have been let me know.

thanks

Fisher or martin indeed... I was forced to "dispatch" one a few years ago..... I walked down a trail I normally walk for upland game...... and I came across one munching on what appeared to be a weasel carcass.... it snarled and growled at me as I came onto it.... I took a step towards it and it continued to snarl... so rather than confront it I chose to go around it.... for every step I took to the right it took 2... go back left, it followed me... so I shot it... not proud of it but to me anything in the woods here that has no fgear of humans has issues... turned the carcass in to the MNR and never heard back.....

That's just normal behaviour. I usually have a pine marten hanging around the meat pole at moose camp at night. They hiss and growl all the time. Also had one by the shop last week, ran up tree and started hissing and growling at me from 10 feet up on a branch. They're not too spooked by humans, same with weasels.
Cute little buggers, though marten are worth a fair but on the fur market, I leave them alone.

I have seen a few fishers... This one wasn't too cute....lol... if it found a tree and let me pass while it hissed I would have done so.... the fact that it appeared to be standing it's ground against me and defending it's territory made me do otherwise.....lol

I've never had that with Fisher, just Marten.

Trust me, it's worse when it happens at night at a few feet when you're heading to the outhouse. :D

I'm thinking a fisher as well.

I know my lab got into a tussle with one in a corn field two winters ago. When I first heard the growls and my dog yelp, I thought he was battling a bear or a cougar. I kid you not the hisses and growls that came from that thing and the yelps from my dog I ran over to it with my knife (all I had) not knowing what I'd find. Finally my dog did the shake of death and killed it right before I got to him, but my dogs nose, mouth and forehead was bleeding, he was completely tired and still MAD. Was a small one too, about 10-15lbs, Male though.

All these little buggers that are part of the weasel family are friggin machines LOL

I have had a porcupine growling at me a few seasons ago, it was behind some large rocks and without knowing I had it cornered. I tell you the safety came off rather quick, thought it was a bear at first. I couldent believe the amount of noise comming from this critter.

My neighbor had a black squirrel get into her basement and it couldn't get out.
So I took a net down, to "fish" it out. It was braver than I was, when cornered.
The heck with the net, I used 40grs. to calm it down and remove it.

No doubt.....lol.... and to think these family type hikers head to the bush with no form of self defence....lmao...

Well, there's two trains of thought on this:

"He who surrenders his personal weapon invites disaster" and "He who wanders unarmed deserves what he gets."

Now that that's over with, What's the best Marten/Fisher defense gun???

It's happened to me several times, twice it was a wild dog. One had pups with her. The other I shot, and there was no apparent reason why it took a dislike to me. Looked like it was near death anyway, thin as a skeleton.
One time it was a bear, and I had no gun. We were working on trails at moose camp in the off season, and I took an evening walk with my cousins dog. That time there was a very bad smell in the air, and it's possible there was a carcass near by. I retreated carefully. Thankfully my cousins dog never picked it up. She had taken a detour before I got that far down the trail. I heard growling, and jaw popping, but never actually saw the bear. Cover was heavy.

It was your stomach.

You need to eat more before going on long walks.

Happens to me all the time ;)

weasel

I was once upland game hunting in Saskatchewan...... walking along a trail.

A small head popped up from a hole in front of me and the little bugger hissed and growled at me.....He let me know I was trespassing.....

My 12 bore would have corrected his bad behavior, but instead I stepped back and cut a wide swath around him.

I can recall looking back at 25 yards and he was still standing tall & giving me the evil stare and growling. Couldn't believe the sound coming from that mini wolverine.

Those kritters (all of the weasel family) aren't afraid of anything....
