something odd happened today

I agree with most posts here that it was likely some member of the weasel family...I had a cute little weasel no bigger than my boot in my garage a couple years ago and the little bigger had the nerve to stand up to me and show his teeth, hissing and chattering/growling away. I chased him out with a broom but we did end up developing a relationship after that and he'd come in everytime I had the door open working on something.

It was most likely a sasquatch....or Wendy looking to feed.

had something like this happen to at lake diefenbaker. was fishing a away on shore when i heard this hissing slash chattering in behind me . turned around and saw four of the little buggers scamper for the rocks. left my minnows and got out of there as fast as i could run across the rocks. went back a the end of the night and all my minnows were gone from the container. greedy little farts.

time to call Josh from Destination Truth to come out and do an episode on this...Sasquatch, Samsquanch, Chupacabra????No...the were-fisher! Man by day, minnow eating Fisher by night!!!

ive been on a 4men recce in borden, that was turned around in the night by a, what turned out to be a ferocious porcupine, we all swore secrecy to what really happen, but it was embaracing

No doubt.....lol.... and to think these family type hikers head to the bush with no form of self defence....lmao...

That always amazes me. We see that a lot, even up here. Hikers and greens travelling alone or in pairs, miles from any means of communication or help, with nothing at all to defend themselves with for days at a time.

No thanks!

I once separated a Raccoon cub and it's mother. The mother had quite the growl going. She postured and false charged me a few times.

I had a hard time explaining to my partners why I was scared of a little weasle growling at me, their stupid smirks were driving me nuts! Validation at last!

definatly agree with fisher. I'v had to throw everything from beer bottles to sticks to deter them. The males usually take off but the females are miserable b*****s(no surprise), two years ago during the deer hunt the dogs pushed a female fisher out onto the towerline and straight towards me snarling away, never thought something could dodge 2 30-30 shots at 20 yds. definatly turned it around though. One morning walking up the road had a male run out of the ditch 5 feet from me, look at me and my buddy, then turn and vanish back into tall grass. I'v almost seen as many fisher as i have deer. never killed one though.

Back to the OP, how much authority was in the growl?

What I mean is, a growl from a fisher, or an otter, has a lot less presence to it than that of a dog/coyote, and way less than a bear.

Otter you say? Yes, I've seen otters more then a mile from water, and I've been growled at by an otter, or more correctly my beagle has. We were camping on a small island deep in the interior of Algonquin park, and were surprised to see a large otter swim by ten feet out from shore, on his back, and growling at my beagle, who of course howled in return.

Racoon or bobcat would be my guess boith have done that to me over the years and like you say scare the crap out of you since you are not expecting anything to be in the tree.Sure is a lot of coyotes this year

It's happened to me several times, twice it was a wild dog. One had pups with her. The other I shot, and there was no apparent reason why it took a dislike to me. Looked like it was near death anyway, thin as a skeleton.
One time it was a bear, and I had no gun. We were working on trails at moose camp in the off season, and I took an evening walk with my cousins dog. That time there was a very bad smell in the air, and it's possible there was a carcass near by. I retreated carefully. Thankfully my cousins dog never picked it up. She had taken a detour before I got that far down the trail. I heard growling, and jaw popping, but never actually saw the bear. Cover was heavy.

yay that would get your attention all right.

yes i'v also had otters growl at me, realatively similiar to the fisher but usually the fishers are more snarly while the otters have more of a bark growl.
