These questions pertain to the original C8 (not the A1, FTHB, etc.).

1) What buffer weight did they come with? CAR, H or H2?
2) What type of front handguards were they issued with, skinny, oval, singal or dual shield?
3) Which CAR stock did they use, the fibrelite version or the cast aluminum version?
4) Peel washer or crush washer?
5) Castellated nut, or the crescent-wrench type?

Claven2, you really need to start a C8 thread. You must have 3 or 4 threads going that all seem to relate to C7, C8 in one way or another.

My answers differ slightly from KevinB:

1-Carbine buffer
2-Skinny six hole
3-Aluminum, coated with vinyl acetate. Replacements are fiberlite so either is correct. Receiver extension is a two position.
4-Peel washer
5-Canada still uses the old style CAR castle nut, the ones with holes as opposed to the notched M4 style in use by most others. Think that's what you're talking about.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. I didn't want to clutter the pictures thread, but this is the only C8 info thread I started...?

Any idea if the crescent-style buffer nut is available anywhere?

Could try a WTB for Colt fiberlite in the EE. As long as someone has the entire assembly, including receiver extension then it would come with the proper nut, hopefull not too knackered from removal.

Or order the Bushmaster part: 5310-917-1153 Telestock 4 position Locking Nut $7.50 when you order your upper.

Yeah, those fibrelites seem hard to come by. It's weird, but it almost seems they come in one size only: loose. The ones I've seen fitted to clone rifles used commercial tubes to get reasonably tight, though I think they left the factory on milspec tubes... does that make any sense?

Are 2-pos extensions still floating about?

I've got two Colt fiberlites on Colt receiver extensions and I wouldn't call either one of them loose. Check under the latch to make sure they have the N 1 markings, those will ensure they're genuine Colt.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the two position extension, can't tell with the buttstock installed and why give yourself less options. Colt aluminum buttstocks with two position extensions came standard on the SP1 carbine, you might score parts off someone who decided to upgrade.

You should checkout retroblackrifle, they have all the necessary info for a C8 clone. They don't have photos of an actual C8 but then again I do believe you have the pictures I took of a C8 overseas.

The Colt ones you have, are they milspec diameter?

Colt only ever made mil-spec diameter.

ETA: M&A parts makes one that looks just like the old Colt fiberlite, mil-spec diameter as well. Don't know if anyone carries M&A up here.

One would think that one would want their play AR to NOT be exactly like the work gun.

I imagine a bunch of you guys drawing your wpns from the vault and measuring with gauges and etc. Hahaha

1) What buffer weight did they come with? CAR, H or H2?

3) Which CAR stock did they use, the fibrelite version or the cast aluminum version?

They also use(d) the plastic Diemaco, D marked butt. Not all that common, but they're around.

Are any original C8's still on issue? I've not seen one in years and years...

I think all were converted to C8A1s which are in service with the armoured and Navy

Can't speak to the 'right now', but back in 2006, we (air det) were kitted up with C7s and C8s on our ship. The C8s were still dressed in the aluminum vinyl acetate stocks. Further, aircrew at my squadron were doing PWTs on original C7s when I left in 2010 (techs were shooting the C7A1).

AFAIK the armoured lost their C8s as early as 2008, at least in Petawawa. Recce Pl 3RCR had some up until 2009. Not sure if any other units are still issued them but they are still issued overseas. On TF 1-10 some, but not all of the medics and artillery had original C8s, the others had C8FTHB or C8A3.

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it some of the FOO and FACs from 2CMBG had them Wainwright this past Oct so they are still out there, albeit in limited numbers.

What do you mean by C8A1? We had some 14.5" skinny barrels that showed up with flat tops and EoTechs on Roto 0 but I've never seen them back in Canada.

You've seen this I'm sure but the rifle below was on issue to a medic on TF 1-10

Whoah... weird. I didn't type that second sentence about C8A1 conversion for Navy and armour...

I wonder if a mod was trying to reply and accidentally edited my post??
