Think the gophers outside of Calgary will like this rifle?

Gophers are not dumb, they have good memories, and they've seen alot of nice rifles, so your's may be another HO-HUM to them, but maybe if they see that bolt knob, they may well stay in their holes.

Can someone explain to me what a gopher hunt is? I didn't realize people would travel to do this.

Really? REALLY? You mean our famous trips in Saskatchewan don't captivate you to no end? We have members here come from every which direction just to sit there, be graced by my presence and shoot gophers.

:) Yeah...I suspect they'll be pretty enchanted. I know I've done a fair amount of staring at it, tomorrow...time to sight her in. The only public range I can shoot this at (and my .223) is almost 2 hours from my house...but what the hell. :) I want both ready for varmints when the time comes. Getting the range bag ready.

Two hrs to the range !!!!!!!!!! That's gotta bite. The range I belong to is 15 min from home. Out here on the prairies gopher guns are where it's at. Yours will fit right in. Nothing like a warm early summer afternoon in a pasture poppin' some off. The land owners are usually pretty receptive after you explain your plans and let them know you're a responsible shooter. A little grey hair helps a lot. Attitude is everything. A gopher gun thread might be a good idea. I have a few to post.

Yeah...life near the big city, a bit of a drag. It's the only public range around, and I'm only going because I have 2 rifles that need sighting in. I'm not much of a "range" guy anyway, so no incentive to join one of the closer, private clubs. Yet. :) The next time I drive 2 hours after this, it'll be to fish...or to hunt the first groundhogs of the year here. Don't want to waste time or ammo sighting-in then, I'll be getting down to business. :)

As for the gophers~a buddy of mine in Calgary has permission to hunt a couple of farms that are overrun with them or rather, WERE overrun with them last year. I won't tell you how much HMR ammo he estimates he went through, but suffice to say....they had their work cut-out for them. Really looking forward to it.

I have the HB version of your new semi auto, they are the most under rated semi auto rimfires ever made. Phenomenal how far away I can kill a gopher with mine. I keep a 2-7 Leupold rimfire on mine. FS

FS What kind of ammo are you using? I tried a few and found it likes Winchester bulk 555. Wally world has it for $20 a box, stocked up on some and will get more. Usual goto ammo is Blazer but hp rounds have a nicer pop when they connect. Did a couple hundred early in the week and had zero issues. This could well be my fav shooter. The Weaver 3-9 ao is a little lacking in magnification, I'm used to 12 to 24 x. I like to look em in the eye. Shot a long time with 4x and it was better than open sights. Please forgive the thread hijack this a subject dear to my heart.

I might have to try another .17 HMR, my experiance in the past was anything but splatterific. Maybe the first batch of ammo was different then it is now because I never saw a single gopher so much as pop when hit by the V-max bullet. Ditto for the V-max bullet out of the WMR. Go hollow or go home is the safest bet, but you already know that. ;)

And again, with the winds we have here your friends shooting the .17 won't be able to compete with your .22 and even if you shoot on a calm day you'll be more then a match for them.

Nice rifle by the way. :)

Hey Pharaoh2~got a chance to put a pile of ammo downrange yesterday, and to my disappointment, those Supremes didn't really shoot worth a damn in my Savage. In fact, in one box alone, I had 4 FTF and one round with badly flattened/dented brass on one side~something I've never seen. I shot at 40 meters to sight in, was easily getting tight groups. Move-out to 100 meters (110 yards) and it was all I could do to get them in the 2" ring. I'm intrigued by your gopher experience with them, so I'll have some on hand for sure...but the rifle seemed to show a strong preference for the Hornady 30gr. V-Max. 4/5 of these in, or on the edge of the 1" ring. Not match accuracy, but gopher-worthy, I say yes! I chose to shoot on the bench using my bipod, as that's the way I hunt...but to decide which ammo I'll be buying in bulk~rest/bag next time.

I had that same experience but double the problems in my savage 17hmr with winchester a ton of ftf and fte and not that accurate either

Not to worry...I'll be sure to lob some anyway. :) Going to the range again in the coming weeks, I want to rule-out the "me" factor a little, and use a proper rest/rear bag. I have enough of that Supreme left to give it another go.
