The bottom line is, I like it, it likes me, and it does the job that it is supposed to do without making me worry about the cost to use it, or if it gets a bit marked up or not.

I callbs that photo is photoshopped, there is now way that a 30-30 with all its short comings as listed by a certain member could kill such a nice fat white tail as posted.
Nice buck and Handy rifle too btw.
Rob
Actually Joe... The OP posted that he does not see the virtues of the 30-30 and I posted because I agree with him and don't see the virtues.... and also disagree with the virtues posted... it's a discussion forum and as such I am entitled to my opinion.... and to post it as long as it is within rules and not hijacking a thread....
Here was my initial response in this thread... I did not post until several dozen posts later.... when someone made a statement that I wished to counter... and it all went downhill from there which was, indeed, partially my fault... as my apology stated....
Note how my initial response was about the virtues of the 30-30 as I see them.... I don't think I was unreasonable in my initial response Joe....
There is a lot of calibers in between 30-30 and retardosuperultramag..... they used to aim with spears too... bowhunters aim... by your own analogy what makes 30-30 better than them?...
I don't think that was the post that got things started for you. I think it might have been this one:
24 pages, are we having serious fun yet. I've hunted all my life with a 444 Marlin and know that for me that rifle is the perfect Canadian moose rifle.
Due to health driven complications I needed to limit myself to deer hunting. So I bought the perfect deer rifle for me, a pre-64 94 in 32WS. My other deer rifle is a flintlock with patched balls.
An excellent hunting rifle and round is not defined by its high velocity, sectional density, ballistic coeffecient, plastic bedding, variable scope, or price tag. My Jeep TJ is a tough agile goat of a jeep. But it is a 70 year old design concept matched or bettered by many more modern vehicles. That doesn't mean only a Mercedes Benz Land Cruiser clone is a requirement or even a better choice, just a different choice to meet a different set of needs for its owner.
If you adjusted your settings it would only be 3 pages of crap instead of 24....![]()

Ffs guys... Give it a rest... I have shot more than most... It wasn't a boast ... I am well aware that many have shot and continue to shoot more than me... It wasn't a boast but a response to someone who insinuated that I never shoot... As far as military service is concerned yes, I was in the military and yes, fired many rounds and yes, I served two tours... No, unfortunately I was unable to join at age 6???
As far as the original post is concerned the question was "why the 30-30?" I have given some perfectly logical answers regarding range, versatility of load as well as availability of various actions... I have also said that 30-30's are capable of their intended purpose which is short range hunting...
You can feel free to disagree with any or all of my above statements but is it really necessary to start with the bs and bravado chit? You guys come in here pushing this cartridge like god himself created it... And act like a bunch of sharks in the water at the slightest scent of blood... The "I'm older and have shot more so I know more" attitude is getting old... Really... And the bs attitude that anyone who doesn't like a 30-30 is a magnum pusher is getting old too...
I am open to learn new things... And believe it or not I know a few things too...
.......The price was right and ammo readily available. The rifle fits my hands very well and my eye naturally and easily finds the sights when I shoulder it. The butt doesnt grab my jacket on the way up and my arms feel like they are in the right position when I am looking down the sights.
I find it as accurate as any other rifle I have hunted deer with, and it is a easy to carry on those days I spend 6 or 8 hours walking through the bush. There is no protruding knobs or scope to get hung up in the thick stuff, and if it breaks, I can get it fixed just about anywhere.
The bottom line is, I like it, it likes me, and it does the job that it is supposed to do without making me worry about the cost to use it, or if it gets a bit marked up or not.
