The Kimber 84M

Since this thread is already headed way off-topic, I'll add some more thoughts on the NULA question.

I seriously considered NULAs flagship model 20 in .284 after years of lusting, even printed out the order form.
I never ended-up going NULA and here are my reasons and the logic behind them.
I talked to a respected member on here {RickF} that had mentioned to me he had the opportunity to handle a NULA and found the stock did not fit him
I had no foreseeable chance to ever shoulder a NULA, so I was buying blind as to fitment.
The other deal breaker was the associated export fees, putting you damn close to 4000$ by the time it arrives.
I like to think I have more money than brains at times, but that is alot of f@ckin' baksheesh for a rifle I've never even handled, even if it does include scope rings! :p

I ended up going to RMR {Corlanes} and after discussing my needs Travis started a work order for an Ultralight based off of a Defiance machine thinhorn action.
Sooo...in a nutshell I am getting a full custom stocked in a mcmillan hunters edge {a stock with which I am very familiar with}
from a Canadian retailer and for hundreds of dollars less than a NULA.
Don't get me wrong I still think NULAs are the t**s, but for me it made more sense to go local.

A Rick is a good guy ain't he? Anyway, do me a favor and don't compare what Melvin does with what Corlanes can. Melvin is far better, and I say this having handled both.
Back to the Kimbers!

Back to the Kimbers!

I have handled neither and am far from completing my journey with Corlanes.
At no point in the post did I imply Corlanes built a better rifle, only why I chose them to build my particular lighweight.
Melvin Forbes is well respected/established designer in the firearms world, but there seems to be plenty of folks happy with Corlanes work as well. Time will tell.

Whitetailjunky it may be a camera distorsion but in the last pic your butt pad looks as though it was installed by a dyslexic savage lover. Maybe Sksavenger got at it he is a sneaky bugger, lives back in the hills.:nest:

Also, congrats to Sun_and_Steel_ 77 for joining the ranks of "Big Mouth"

Hey Blargon

Do you have any links etc that talk about the change in ejectors for the Cooper M52? I have not heard of anyone having the same issues with ejection as the Sakos and heard nothing of the change to a plunger. Any info would be great. Thanks.

It was on 24hourcampfire where I saw the issue, and a poster had called Cooper and they told him this...

The 52's used a blade ejector just like Foxbat's until just a few months ago. They have now gone to the plunger ejector on all models, 52's and 56's included. Due to the lug design and ejection angle some folks were complaining about the emptys hitting the bottom of the scope on ejection. Going to the plunger ejector served two purposes, one - it gave more latitude in placement of the ejector, and two - it simplified manufacturing and inventory concerns by not having to deal with two different types of bolts.

Bottom line - If you have a 52 made between 2007 (introduction year) and recently it will have a blade type ejector, if it is newer than that it will have the plunger ejector.

You can see right on their site where they changed the design to "retractable tab" (plunger)...

Personally, I prefer the plunger...

Hey Sun and Steel

What does your final price look like from RMR if you don't mind me asking? Before Jan. first 2012 you could get a NULA in a non magnum caliber for $2975. That includes hard case and scope mounts. I figured with exchange and import fees the final bill would be around $3450. In the custom rifle world that seems reasonable to me and I think it would be hard for a Canadian builder to come in a whole lot cheaper?!?! I understand you not wanting to buy blind but doing the math in my head I can't see how a RMR will be much cheaper. Just my opinion.

Hey blargon

I just talked to Cooper and you are correct. They have been changed to a plunger. Funny nobody on the internet talked about it that I noticed. Thanks again.

Hey LT, Sun and Steel said you were the guy my Montana is going to. I figured I aught to tell you personally. I've decided to sell the gun locally and I'm sorry, but the local is offering me more money and I'm giving him less.

Hey blargon

I think retractable tab is what they are calling a blade type ejector or am I mistaken?

264magnum, just PM me.
If your price is around 3500$ landed for a NULA model 20 that seems pretty decent. My RMR build will be somewhere in that ballpark.

I think what I need to make clear here is that I am sure the NULA is a work of art and am not implying my rifle will be any better. I might never know.
There is something to be said for a man who designs a product from the ground up and successfully markets it.

I will post the weight of my finished rifle when it's in my hands, but I can speculate that it will be very comparable to a model 20...just have to see.

I have had 5 go through my hands. 2 were lemons, and 3 where great.
This one just came through the door, and is going to help a new hunter shooter.
I believe another gnut had it built, a nice little custom in 6.5x47L.

6lbs 3.8oz with talleys and 4-12x40.

rem338 is that bolt handle one of the Ti ones that dude was selling over on the campfire?

Hey I appreciate you telling me, I guess 1400bucks was to good to be true...

:ar15:

Just ####in with you, its in the mail enroute to Sun and Steel :D

FWIW, I don't cancel deals because someone offers me more after I mark it sold. I've been on the other end of the fence and it sucks, so I vowed never to do it to others. :dancingbanana:

I would still hurt you for that. Just kick and not remove your wee member.

Thanks for the post Coyne 5, I think I am going to buy an 84M in 7-08. I too am looking for an all weather light mountain type gun and cant live without the CRF and 3 position safety. Im a little leery from hearing a few negative reviews (feeding, poor grouping..) but am thinking of rolling the dice on one too.

WOuld have bought one last weekend but wholesale sports did not have one anywhere in Canada.

Yak
