I have decided I need a 30-06 Semi for hunting (okay so I can have another gun for hunting). I dont like Remington so I suspect Im either looking at Browning or a Benelli. Any experience with either of these pros & cons and are there any other ones you would suggest I check into before making a decision. I have shouldered both and they both feel comfortable. Also any feedback on the the BAR with BOSS system

Have a 30-06 longtrack wooden stock.Accurate out of box, very nice gun.I have a Benelli R1 270wsm in the comfort tech stock.Benelli is much heavier, and had to reload to get it to shoot half inch groups, with a lead sled.BOSS is great for recoil, but hard on the ears.Tuning the BOSS is worth the time.

I have/had quite a number of BAR rifles...Not one complaint..

I have a few friends who carry the R1 rifles. Never heard of any issue with any of them either.

I don't think you can go wrong either way...Not fussy on the BOSS...In the Browning I prefer the Safari, all steel construction over the aluminum...

The BOSS on the BBR yes...BAR no! The Recoil in the BAR is a non issue, and it is a Semi-auto hunting rifle, where it will probably never have tack driving accuracy, so the addition of a BOSS is not needed on the BAR....

As for my preference on the steel over the aluminum, it is just that...While the aluminum is lighter, it does scratch easier, and looks far worse than steel when marked.

Is that better?????

I've had a Benelli R1 30/06 since they started to assemble them in the states, as a matter of fact I ordered it from the factory through Buffalo gun on harlem rd in Buffalo and had to wait 3 months to get it. That was when you could bring them across the border with no hassel. I have had several BAR's in different calibers and also Heckler & Koch 940, which was the dirtiest auto I have ever shot. In my experience the Benelli is by far the best of lot, mine is a MOA rifle with factory ammo and the only one to compare was the H&K but it was so dirty to shoot you had to dismantle and clean it evey time you used it. But this is my opinion and others may differ.

PS Over the years that I've been repairing firearms I have had to drive out the piston with a punch out of the BAR's on many of my customers guns but after all these years and in the vicinity of 1000 rounds I have not had that problem with my Benelli

Know your in the game. What about the Benelli?

As I stated above...I have a few friends that have them...No issues....

I did however sight in three R1s...One 270WSM, a 300WSM, and a 308...They all functioned perfecty...Every bit as accurate as any BAR I have ever had..Good rifle IMO..

I have an R1 in 300 Win Mag and the gun is great. One thing you will notice right away is that the R1 is lighter and much better balanced. The BAR is front heavy and wasn't my favourite to carry around all day. My 300 topped off with a 3x9x40 VX-II and weighs in around 8 pounds 5 ounces and it shoots inside an inch and a half with factory ammo. What else can you ask for?

Take them apart as well and you will find the R1 is simpler, easier to clean and I think made with better materials. The BAR's are good guns, but the R1 is a better engineered, easier carrying rifle.

Benelli are very reliable, dont know the Bar but my MR-1 been perfect for thousands of shots and maintenance is almost not needed... Cheers. JP.

Hey - everyone thanks for all the input. I leaning towards the Benelli 30-06 rifle because I have an SBE2 and like it (meaning I have had a good experience with a Benelli). For centrefires I have a BLR 308 , Tikka T3 270 wsm and Weatherby 300 Whby mag .. so this should round out my collection ... now what's next :D

And if anyone has a nice Benelli R1 for sale let me know :dancingbanana:

I have never owned a Benelli but have heard lots of good things about them.

I have/had a few BAR's and really prefer the Short Trac synthetic version.

I grew up with Rem pump rifles and shotguns so with the BAR having the cross-bolt safety in the same position (at the rear of the trigger guard) makes things easier for me. The Benelli cross-bolt safety is at the front of the trigger guard same as the older winchester pump shotguns and semi rifle/shotguns where, so anyone more accustom to those would prefer the Benelli.

Okay - My plan is to get the Benelli R1 - has anyone shot the R1 with and without Comfortech - Is there much of a recoil difference that you noticed. I like the Walnut stock ..... but not if it's going to pound my shoulder black after 4 hours of target practice. I have my 300 Whby mag for that!

Probably not the gun for you. They have lite barrels, and heat up quickly. After four hours of target shooting you and the gun would be disapointed.

with vs without the Comfortech

Probably not the gun for you. They have lite barrels, and heat up quickly. After four hours of target shooting you and the gun would be disappointed.

gtrussel -Thanks for the input ( and good point) however I should clarify. I dont plan on shooting it for 4 hours straight "like a semi" but simply spending enough time with it that Im comfortable with it in the bush when hunting.

I am more interested in the felt recoil with vs without the Comfortech on the rifle. I can find a lot of information regarding this topic on the difference in their shotguns but not so much regarding the R1 rifle
