A polar bear with a bow? Considering how dangerous those things are reputed to be, that idea hadn't even crossed my mind. No doubt it was a memorable hunt!
Actually IMagius, the polar is the most layed back bear I've ever encountered, we had to move camp because a 6' sow adopted us and we couldn't risk it. She would come within 10 ft of us in camp and lay down, we'd holler and chase her away and 15 min later she'd be back 50 ft away watching us, but never in the three days she "stayed" with us was she even the slightest aggressive.

To answer your question, as with Fred no I had to 338 the bear, not because he charged us but he waded into the dog string and started roughing up the dogs. The old Eskimo went nuts and threw the rifle at me screaming SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT He's killin' my dogs. Which I did and sorely regreted later. I hated those f.......g dogs, he could have killed them all for all I cared. Regardless another top 5 record animal that can't be entered.
My shot was perfect too and only 18 mts out, I've kicked myself many times, he would have died in seconds (heartshot) and who cares if he killed a couple of mangy currs.
