Right now i have a Savage 93R17 FV, decked out to the whole 9 yards. My thing is that it costs so much to shoot that i cant afford to shoot it. Do i trade it on a Ruger SR-22 (if i do trade it, that will be what i trade it on). I like the gun, just cannot afford to shoot it. I hardly even get to shoot it anymore (shot 6 times in 2011). Should i trade it?

Keep it, and buy the SR-22.

Then save up for a small caliber centerfire, such as .223 or 204.

That makes the trinity of gopher guns.
Only then will you be truly prepared for gopher shooting.

And there is a emotional tie to it, that was my 1st gun i had bought, i worked hard for it but parents say its either one or other, cant have both :(

Warning, if you get an SR-22 you will be tempted to spend a metric butt ton customizing it

The Savage .17HMR is a better rifle in my opinion, and it sounds like you're using it for gopher work. The .17HMR has a better "effect" on those buggers than a .22lr too.

Money is money, so let's talk about that.

If you're tight for $, you're actually taking a step-up in terms of gun costs and no matter what you sell your HMR for, you'll still need to kick-in more than $100 (probably more) to get into that SR22~a gun that doesn't have the reach, accuracy, nice trigger, or punch that the HMR has. I was 15 once (27 years ago :) ) so I understand the appeal of the SR22, but there are plenty of semi auto .22s that cost 1/2 (or less than that) of what the SR22 costs. I just bought a Marlin 795 for $125 (including tax) that out-shoots any factory 10/22 I've ever used, and you could 3 or more of those for the cost of a Ruger SR22.

If you haven't already, take a look at what your rifle sells for used, then decide if you have the cash to make the step-up to the SR22 and go from there. Good luck!

Thanks you made a good point. And the tempting part is that this dealer will go gun for gun (i give the .17 2 clips sling) and keep bi-pod and scope. In return he gives me brand new ruger sr-22. Thats tempting

Another thing to consider.

The 17 HMR's cost will prevent you from the spray and pray that semi auto's lead to. Believe me, I was there.

Despite the cost, many times the $ per actual-dead-gopher is less with the 17 HMR in a good bolt gun rather than the ruger 10-22. At least mine was costing me more because I had four 25 round magazines and a speed loader.

Its not ###y or tacticool but learning to make slow precise shots in your youth will be very valuable as you get older.

Get the SR22...and blast the HELL out of it!
Gophers have met their maker for many, many years with a .22
When you grow tired of it in a few years, maybe you'll have some cash on hand to trade it in and move along to something else.
Your only young once.... ;)

If you can get a brand new SR-22 in a even trade for a used 93r17FV, run, don't walk, to that store and seal the deal. If you don't like the SR, you can sell it and buy a couple FV's. However you will probably like the SR. (I own both)

Like i said earlier. the only thing holding me back is the emotional tie. I still have awhile before he gets them in again. (small town gun store)

Right. Something does not add up for me though... A $275 used gun that a dealer is willing to trade for a $550 brand new gun?

You could take the trade, sell the SR, Buy a savage mkII in .22lr, and a marlin 795 and have two guns!

I dont know whats up with the deal, but if it is a solid BNIB SR-22 id take the deal and run out of the store giggling like a little schoolgirl.

It does sound stupid i know. But this is the guy i bought my .270 from and he cant get in alot of .17's so when he can get one on trade, he will. Thats small town gun stores. And not to mention i have been a loyal customer to him :D

and mikeystew he will trade it when it is on sale (coming up here) so it might be say 479 on trade vs the full 525. get what im sayin??

I had a sr22 while it is a fun gun its heavy, expensive to buy, and not all that accurate. I traded the sr for a s&w/howa 1500 in .243. Then I picked up a 93r17 fvss. Changed the stock and its alot better gun then the sr I had could ever be. Alot more accurate and reaches out farther.

Id keep the 93 and if you still want to at a later date get an sr.
