My dad has a few hundred 7.62 milsurp rounds lying around and im using them for practice in my rem 700 (308). A guy at the range told me to stop doing it because the hairlike difference in cartridge dimensions might cause problems such as an exploding rifle. Ive been told to avoid doing something similar with 556 and 223 because the NATO rounds are loaded to a higher pressure compared to its commerical counterpart. Should i be concerned?

I did some googling last night and the guys said its OK because 7.62 NATO is loaded to a lesser pressure compared to commerical 308. Nothing in regards to cartridge dimensions was mentioned.

Whats your take on this?

baloney- this exists with the 223, as it has a shorter neck than the 5.56, but most manufacturers actually chamber for 556 anyway- as far as the 7.62 goes, it's really INTERCHANGABLE with 308 win- it's darned hard to get 7.62 nato and most folks have been using 308 for years- as far as blowing up the gun goes, well, you've seen the wind

well there essentially the same round i wouldnt worry about it bud. as for the higher pressures dont tell the reloaders who are makin barrel burners lol they might blow up there guns lol

Fine to shoot 7.62 nato in your 308. I've not found any that's as good as today's hunting ammo, accuracy wise, so its not worth it for anything serious.

C-21 cartridge?

~146g at +/- 2700fps. ~50000psi. Quite safe specs.

Nothing fancy. Not super accurate. But good enough for cheap practice...;)

Cheers.

As already stated about .308 and 7.62 are the same. .223 and 5.56 are the same. If it wasn't there would be a ton of pictures on the WWW of blown up rifles.

I've got me some PMC 62 gr ball in 5.56 and I'm going to shoot it out of my Remington sps. Am I scared? Nope, I've fired at least 1000 5.56 out of various .223 rifles and not had a problem. They clam it's the throat not the cartirdge neck. More freebore will give lower pressures on the same load if I'm not mistaken(depending on seating depth of course). I guess some older rifles had shorter throats.

I fired I'd say up to one thousand IvI 762Ball ammo through 3 sporting .308s in the 1980s. One being a BLR81 lever gun. No problems, in chambering, extraction, or any pressure signs. It was not particularly accurate in any, but the Parkerhale 1200 with 1-14 twist, could hold sub- 2 moa with it. The 762NATO has thicker brass, giving less internal case capacity. The way the head space dimensions are gauged are a little different, with the NATO round having loser tolerances, for service rifle and MG operations under adverse conditions. The only problem is at times, rifles that are chambered for 762NATO and you shoot commercial .308 in them, the thinner commercial case could separate in the loose 762NATO head space tolerances. This of course is opposite to your scenario so I don't see any problem. It may actually be what the person on the range was referring to, but it got mixed up .
