Hi

I have been researching pistols for a while and have decided on the Sig Sauer P226. I am not sure what direction to go though. I have 2 options and would like some info please.

Sig P226 9mm and then get the .22LR conversion kit OR

Sig P226 classic (.22LR) then get the 9mm conversion kit known as the exchange kit. I think this way would be the cheapest way to go but is the pistol as good of quality as the regular P226?

Anyone have the classic and if so how do you like it?

Thanks!

The frame is exactly the same. I bought the 22 and then a 40 X-change, Definatly the cheapest and best way to go. They both shoot well. I even got a 357 sig barrel. 3 guns in one! I did end up getting adjustable sights because I don't like the way these guns sight.

I bought a P226 enhanced elite and use the .22LR conversion kit on it. Works great. Remember the .22LR slide doesn't lock back -- unless you buy after market followers from the US.

When I bought my P226 Elite I had the same question in my mind, do I go 9mm or 22LR? I went with the 9mm because the dealer (Epps) told me that the .22LR conversion kit is not available (at least not in Canada). It was a simple decision after hearing that.

I put a deposit on the .22LR conversion kit because they were sold out. I'm still waiting for the delivery.

When you do get the 22 conversion kit you will love it. I started out with a 40 platinum elite and then bought the conversion. Never jams with decent 22 ammo and the adjustable sights that come with the top end slide are great. Good choice on the SIG :)

Get the classic .22 pistol then the X-change kit in whatever caliber makes your day. Going this way you will save a bunch up front.

+1 on the "Buy the .22 classic first than a 9mm X-change kit." I did, and got both for about $100 more than the 9mm alone. I researched this extensively before buying and determined that everything else is equal between the .22 and 9mm other than the required barrel/slide combo and magazine. Great gun, I love mine in both calibers. The .22 likes mini-mags, and the 9 eats everything.

Hey thanks for all your info guys. I have been researching this allot as well. Reason why I chose the P226 is that a good friend of mine uses it as his side arm with the OPP. I have shot it and really liked it. I use to have a Browning Hi-Power years agoe and I liked that but prefer the Sig. The only down side to the Sig .22LR is that the slide does not lock back on the last round but I did find someone who sells after market mags to solve that. The dealer close to where I live said he sells nothing but the mini-mags for .22LR.

I think it will solve my other decision on what model P226 I would want if I went with the 9mm first then the conversion kit.

Well I made the purchase today of my new Sig Sauer P226 classic with beaver tail. I will then get the 9mm conversion kit later but I am curious. Might be a stupid question but do they register the exchange kit as well as if you have a 9mm hand gun?

No. Only frames. Congrats by the way. The Sig P226 classic was my first pistol as well. You'll be glad you choose it.

Good purchase. I went the same route, minus the beavertail. Just got my 9mm x-change kit and have been real happy with it so far. I think you'll be glad you went with the Sig, nice pistol.

Great buy. 8,000 rounds on my latest P226 (9mm) so far and not a single FTE or FTF. The .22 lr conversion is also very reliable and I don't recall any brand of ammo giving me any problems. One thing you may consider adding to the new gun is the SRT. Mine is old enough to come without it but I tried it in my P229 with the SRT and loved it, I ordered one for the P226, installed myself and used it for the first match last week. Great and a substantial improvement, especially if your shooting involves speed.

Where did you get the SRT and was hard to install yourself? The beaver tail is something I thought I would try. Hope I don't regret it. I will also order a couple followers for the mag as well. Thinking of the stainless steel guide rod as well.

Either way I can't wait to get it :)

SIG is the only way to go. Lots of options for different pistols and calibres. Very reliable and well made, both old and new. I have a bunch of older ones and even more newer ones and have not experienced any problems that haven't been attributed to operator error.

I'm looking at doing this as well. I have the Sig P226 in .22LR, with the beavertail and I love it. What I've been told is that the CFO will change your registration from Calibre: .22LR to Calibre: Multiple.

Oh, and buy a few hundred CCI Minimags. After those it should eat pretty much anything.

I don't have the paperwork with me right now but I believe I bought my SRT from Target Sports in Calgary. I can check when I go home tonight to verify. The installation was very easy. You push out the pin that holds the disconnector, sear and ejector, remove the disconnector and sear and put in the two new ones. Make sure you put grease on the sear where it contacts the hammer and you're good to go. I'd say it took me 10 minutes because I was slow! :)
