Good morning CGN,
I picked up this Colt 1911 Government model over this past week. Its a bit dirty, but its got the history. What do you think?

Wow!! want to lay a bet that old "Fritz" was compassionately put down with that very .45?
IMHO....if I were the OP, I would endeavour to contact Mr. Young of the 48th and make him aware of the pistols whereabouts. The Regiment would no doubt wish to acquire it and some would argue that's where it belongs. Having said that, I wouldn't blame the OP one bit for wanting it for himself.
If the OP has no heirs, he may consider "willing" it to the Regiment. as he won't need it anymore.![]()
I am a reservist myself so I would like for this to end up in the proper hands especially a place where its full history would be appreciated. I have been in contact with the 48ths and plan on it being returned there within the next couple of weeks.Gorgeous old lady. I'm sure she did her bit for the man who carried her and the country he represented.
I agree that the Reg should be notified that the pistol is in the hands of a private collector and that they should be given first crack at her if you ever decide to sell.
Thank you for sharing your find and the man's history.
Lest we forget.
