noob brass question

Howwzit that thy die doth do s**te to that wretched case neck whilst my own would smush it straight with the world??:D

Some dies only have a thin decapping pin, that is the uber rare rhino stopping mall ninja repelling wrist breaking 10mm N-BUM cartridge (Non-Belted Ultramag'allmost) in said pic... Dies are older Hornady ND dies I got used off the EE... Straight wall pistol cases don't require the expander feature in a FL die as they have expander/flare dies in there family set to round out the case mouth and expand the case to accept the bullet whilst adding a slight bell to the case mouth... Wow that's a lot for 1 lonely die to do huh?...

So Mall Ninja Master then the size of the decapping pin makes the difference??
Cases once fired require no futher squishing to retain another bullet if all that is required is to flare the case mouth??

I'm unworthy Master as confusion still clouds my humble mind!
Never have I loaded a round of 9mm but many,many of the wore called 45 ACP!
 
In a 3 die set for straight walled cases,

- the first die sizes the outside of the case,

- the second die sizes the inside of the case (actually, just the neck portion of the inside of the case) and, if you choose, can apply a small flare to the mouth of the case to make bullet seating easier.

- the third die seats the bullet.

To correct the defect seen in the pictured case would actually require the attention of 2 dies.

1st, I'd send it to the "inside sizing" die to make the defect move to the outside of the case and make it round, then to the "outside sizing" die, to make the case perfect, then it'll be ready to prime and send back to the "inside sizing" die.

Gentlemen

You are mixing metaphors here, it was my understanding young Mr. seanross was loading for a 308 (not mentioned here but gleaned from another thread) therefore you are but throwing more confusion into the mix by bringing up straight walled cases and their different attendant problems.

To the OP, young Mr. seanross, on bottle neck cases you may in fact just reround the case mouth, if it is extremely caved in or flattened and carry on, I use a loaded round for this when necessary, with a pointy bullet. Out of round or dinted case mouth straight walled cases on the other hand must always be re-rounded or very near round before sizing, or you see what happens in the previous postings.

The first die pass FL sizes the case. This gives the brass the "memory" to retain the bullet and pushes it back close to manufactures specs.
There's no way in hell that that bit of brass in the pictures /before/after passed through a FL die.

The second die flares the case mouth. If you take the time to actually adjust or dissassemble your die you will learn and see how this actually works.

This has nothing to do with resizing inside or outside of your cases other than the short section of case mouth you plan on seating your bullet in.

The third die seats and possibly crimps your bullet.

Imagin if when you were squeezing a piece of brass on the outside... The inside got smaller... Whoa... Crazy... Now just ask yourself what if the tensile strength of a bullet exceeded the yield strength of the brass is was forced into... Like wow man... I bet the bullet would size the inside of the brass case!?... Heavy eh? Ya..

But I bet you reload cast bullets for that lead lobber don't ya? When you get into lead rules change....

Not all FL dies have expanders in them :D
 
Those dies are part of 3 die sets. In die sets for straight walled cartridges, no full-length size dies (#1 dies) have internal expanders in them. Refer to post #24 for how to fix you cases.

In die sets for bottle-necked cartridges (which is what the OP's post was apparently about), virtually all conventionally designed die sets will include a case neck expander in the sizing die.

The OP dident specify what type of brass he was dealing with so I just tossed in my .02 about pistol brass.

Who needs expensive dies to fix brass when expensive bullets work just as good :D

But thats not the ugly malformed missfit begging for a clean pass thru with an expader ball in your original photos.

Actually no, straight walled pistol cases are exactly that "straight walled", non-bottle neck rifle cases are referred to as straight taper, ie 45-70, 458 win, and 444 mar etc, etc, etc, are all straight taper cases requiring 3 die sets.
