The future of the C7?

20-25 YEARS.

Now I have no clue that it will be. It's hard to say what will be the trend/technology in 20 years from now. Just in the past decade Americans changed their minds many many times about what would be the next assault rifle. They now use ( mostly ) the M4... That tells a lot.

P.S. I think that what will start the CF to look for a replacement rifle will be when NATO will decide to go for a caliber change. When the round is change ( if so ) only then we will start looking for the system to use it. If we keep the 5.56 I think we will be stuck with the C7 for a long time. If NATO adopt a new round things might change faster.

As the guy who posted the pics of the broken 552s that we were using in Iraq I feel the need to chime in, even though it's kind of irrelevant to the thread. We only had issues with 552s. Big Red did use a 551 he "obtained" for a while and had no issues with it. The 552s were bad guns because of the mechanical differences from the rest of the series, but you shouldn't paint the entire series with the same brush. They certainly are heavier then ARs, and that is something to be considered. I think any army armed with 17.9 and 14.3 551s would be well equipped for any fight. 552s were rubbish though.

That being said, it's irrelevant since the CF is essentially married to Colt Canada, so any future iteration of the C-7 will continue to be an easy modification of the current platform.

I got some info from a NATO working group on small arms (2 years ago I think...) and the word was no change, the 5.56 is adequate and troops need to work on marksmanship and more realistic targetry.

So no change in platforms C7-C8 are here to stay, I do see the 20" barrel getting dumped in the near future. US is using almost all M4s now and even the new Brit DM rifle has a 16" barrel but its 7.62

Intel is the key as always. No ammo changes? Same gun for a long time.

I also agree on the 20". 16"-18" for everybody sounds plausible.

Cheers.

After all the "input" , we will get a C7 with a heavier 20" barrel with monolithic upper like the Dane's C7, as well as some version of the Elcan Spectre and the eagle GL.

You may not like the outcome, but it is probably pre-determined. We just have to reshape whatever potential input to support a pre-determined outcome.

oh you should see some ranges in the spring :D picking up brass with a rake and shovel

steel cases will have that one advantage.

I did my MG course about 20 odd winter's ago. We shovelled the snow from around the line after each shoot into the old steel vehicle drip pans which we then thawed out pack at the shacks. Some cleaned C6's and 50's while the unlucky ones sorted frozen link and brass from the twig, grass, and sand soup they melted into. Range control was stricter (or just bigger dicks) back then and wouldn't let us come back in the spring ;)

Steel cases will be a godsend, though I doubt if it would have changed anything back then.

OK, now let's assume you get to spend Stephen's dollars refitting the CF with your next gen C7 (congrats on the promotion you're now MND). What stays, what goes and how does it look?

LMT's for everyone... 5.56MRP's and 308MWS

MAGPUL AFG's and Elcan Spectre DR's or OS4 w/ docter optics.
