My main hunting rifle is a savage 12 varmint 300WSM. 26" heavy barrel. As long as you are comfortable carrying it and shooting it away from a bench and bags....it should work just fine
I hunt deer with a heavy barreled Sako, if you can handle the extra weight and get a good comfortable sling, it won't be a problem. It also depends on the terrain you hunt on and the type of hunting you do.
I have a heavy barrel Ruger .308 that gotten me lots of deer. If you stand hunt, as I do, not a problem. It's a little heavy and long for protracted bush walking or moving in heavy cover. I usually take my 20Ga slug gun or my SKS if I'm pushing or in thicker bush. Your call.
I'm thinking of eventually going with a target/varmint 308 tikka and T3 lite 243. Not sure in which order or which one is most likely to deter me from buying the other.
son #1 just sold his s/s T3 lite 308, was a dandy one for hunting, bang on head shots and filled the freezer for 2 yrs in a row, why he sold it???. he is now shopping for a T3 or something similar in 25-06, 257 Wby, 260 Rem or 7mm-08. anything out there for sale?
Are you hefty like Hulk, a few more pounds to tote, what the hay???
Naw, I'd say, buy another rifle, something lighter to sling, but keep the V.S. your collection needs to grow!
All depends if you will be walking a lot really... as the years go by and you gain more hunting experience, you will realize a few things. 1) you don't need huge calibers to drop game, 2) you don't need big scopes, 3) heavy rifles suck. Of course this varies with the terrain and the distance of the average shot, but you get my drift...
While it is quite possible to hunt with a heavy rifle, it's not my choice to do so. The fact you are asking the question at all means you already know the heavy rifle is less than ideal. If it is all you have, go hunting. If you are going to do a lot of hunting, get a hunting rifle that will be more fun to carry, and more "agile" in hunting situations.
But, like I said, the question means you already know that's the best plan.
I'm no fan of Tikkas, but most guys won't mind even a 10lb rifle for standard deer hunting. I do believe the original "Featherweight" Winchesters weren't far off 8lbs, we're getting soft in our advancing years as a sport.
I hunted for years with a 338 win mag that was a tad over 10 pounds when loaded. Now I'm looking at a Ruger varmint/target M77 in 25-06 for deer hunting in the wheat fields.
I hunt with my M14 (10 lbs loaded), my Rem Varmint (10 lbs loaded), my Savage Max 1 (shade under 10 lbs loaded), my Savage 111 30-06 (just under 9 lbs loaded) and my bubba'd Weatherby carbine (8.5 lbs loaded).
I really do not know a difference, other than the placement of the shots and lack of recoil with the slightly heavier rifles.
If I get tired, I sit, rest and smell the flowers or decaying cow poop.
I used to carry a 10lb rifle for years, but after some shoulder injuries and getting a little older i`ve lightened up a little for my deer rifle. I sold a heavy barreled 204 and went with a t3 lite for coyotes. The varmint weight will likely shoot tighter groups in the long run and if you can tote it around comfortably while hunting go for it.
