I gathered you are new to shooting – target and hunting. The T3 Varmint 308 will work for both occasions especially when you are excited about the hobby and have plenty of energy. However, like many have warned you that it is unpleasant to carry a heavy rifle and walk the whole day.
BTW I hunt with a T3 Lite in 308 (among a collect of light hunting rifles) and target shoot with a Varmint.
As you pick up more experience and have a few loose change in you pocket you will want something lighter to carry when hunting.
The T3 Varmint should be less than 8lbs bare - so similar to a Winchester Model Super Grade. That is a bit heavy by today's standards, but certainly not too heavy.
I hunt with a t3 varmint in 7 mag. Not that heavy when compared to a lot of wood stocked rifles and it's nice to shoot at the range. I use a safari sling when I hunt, seems to keep the weight centered over the body rather than on one shoulder. Have fun
T3 lite synthetic - 6-3/8 lbs
T3 Lamanated - 6-5/8 lbs
T3 HB Super Varmint SS - 8 lbs
so... varmint is 1 and 3/8 lbs heavier?
if you can really feel that difference maybe you should just hit the gym once a week? you know, hop on the old treadmill and start throwing 5lb dumbell's around like a boss.
But seriously man use whatever gun you want. if in 40 years you find it's too heavy pack around...sell it
I never met a heavy barrel that i wanted to walk about the woods with... And ive tried it. I quit using a heavy barrel varminter even for varmints, and now just use a sporter. Plenty accurate and light to pack. Ymmv, its all about what you want to carry.
I used my heavy barreled SPS Tactical in .308 for hunting last fall. I use this rifle for the long shots across farm fields. My sks is my bush gun for the close up shots.
Lots of people use much larger rifles for deer hunting. I think the .308 is the most appropriate rifle for deer hunting.
Nothing wrong with carrying a varmint style rifle for hunting. If one is in decent physical shape it's not a big problem. Not idea for mountain hunting. But a heavier rifle usually means less felt recoil, and less barrel hop. I've done it.
I've found when shooting in field positions, the heavier rifle will allow for a more stable sight picture and will be less effected by your heart rate from walking all day. You're not shooting from a bench rest and hitting what you're aiming at should be priority #1. Thus, a heavier rifle should be preferable.
Why do people care about the difference in weight between a 6.5lb gun and a 7.5lb gun? 1lb? Seriously?
You're not even carrying it in your arms most of the time. Get a good sling and let you shoulders/back carry the weight! What would these people who say they need a light rifle do if they gained 1-5lbs? Collapse into a puddle of jelly? Jesus guys, get off the couch if 1-5lbs is a consideration for you...
