parts listing I'll start at the top.
The slide
Drifted out the rear sight. I had a Wilson fixed sight in my parts bin. It happened to fit. Had to file the front sight down a bit but works well. no other cahanges to the slide except for opening up the breach face to allow the 40 rounds to slide in. No changes to the extractor or firing pin or ejector. Fitted the 40 barrel (a Kart, got that on th EE exchange page) fitted a link, a #3 just had to file the hood a smidge to allow the barrel to lock up properly. Barrel came with a bushing so no issues there. The 40 bushing and the 9mm bushing are different.
Frame
Stripped the frame to bare. The trigger parts are questionable. I had all sorts of spare parts in my bin so pollished a trigger and fitted it so there was virtually no resistance when moving it. Polished the hell out of it to make sure it worked smooth. Prepared a sear (from my parts bin) on a jig from Brownells, then polished all contact surfaces on the sear and disconnector to eliminate as much friction as possible. Kept the original hammer, but polished the sides to ensure smooth funcioning. I replaced the three finger sear spring with a 4 finger (bought on EE), always used a 3 but thought I would try a 4. Ended up with about a 2 1/4 lbs trigger pull with both the 3 and 4 finger spring. Used a bit grease to reassemble the trigger group to help prevent sear bounce.
Replaced the ambi thumb safety with a wider one in stainless. I don't need ambi as I can no longer shoot weak hand anyway.
For the grips I put skateboard tape on the front strap and a new set of grips from EE
Added a mag well (from my parts bin), also had to add base pads to the original mags. The Willson ten round mags do not need a base pad as they are longer. The mags with base pads look like they will fit the IPSC box fine. ( compared them to my Para standard gun.
The same slide and ejector and modified slide seems to work well with both calibers. Change over takes only a minute or two.
I can now shoot in the new Classic SS division with either 9mm minor or 40 major in IPSC.
One thing I am also going to try is see what kind if trigger I can get by using the original trigger group that came from Norinco. The parts look cheap but I think I can still get a decent trigger job with polishing and honing.
If anyone wants pictures I could take some this weekend.
