Started my winter project with the purchase of an Norinco NP29.
Did some improving ie trigger 21/4 pound nice and crisp, some accent patrs new grips-- nice 9mm gun
Decided on some more upgradws. Got a 40S&W barrel and mags. Now I have a 9mm/40cal.
Added a GSG 22cal kit.
Same frame 3calibres.
Shoot nice with all three.

Total cost about $800

To convert to 40 all I did was fit the hood and using a proper file removed a wee bit of metal off the sides of the breech face till it allowed a 40 round to slide into place. It feeds fine and extracts fine with the same extractor.

This is a project i'm interested in doing myself, can you provide more details on the tools you used and the work you did to the breech face?

The GSG kit came from Blue Line One of the sposors above. I did have to do some fitting to make it fit properly. Had to file the ejector sligtly to allow the 22 slide to function. Also had to file the opening for the slide lock pin slightly. The 22 kit work well

To fit the 40 cal. The barrel I had to fit the hood (not much). For the breech face I ground one side of a file so I had a 90 degree file that was smooth on one side. Using this file I slightly opened up the breach face by filing on both sides slightly untill a 40 case would slide into place. I found the actual breach face was large enough. I did nothing to the extractor and it seems to work fine. I fired about 300 rounds of 9mm and 40 without any problems.

Of course you need another set of mags for 40 but I found that the 40 mags seem to work with 9mm==have to look into this some more.

If you need more info contact me.

I see you've changed the sights. What kind are they and how much fitting did you need to do to install them? From what I understand the rear sight cut is the standard colt spec but the front sight is small, only .250" wide at the bottom of the dovetail by my measurement.
Also, which mag well is that?

parts listing I'll start at the top.

The slide

Drifted out the rear sight. I had a Wilson fixed sight in my parts bin. It happened to fit. Had to file the front sight down a bit but works well. no other cahanges to the slide except for opening up the breach face to allow the 40 rounds to slide in. No changes to the extractor or firing pin or ejector. Fitted the 40 barrel (a Kart, got that on th EE exchange page) fitted a link, a #3 just had to file the hood a smidge to allow the barrel to lock up properly. Barrel came with a bushing so no issues there. The 40 bushing and the 9mm bushing are different.

Frame

Stripped the frame to bare. The trigger parts are questionable. I had all sorts of spare parts in my bin so pollished a trigger and fitted it so there was virtually no resistance when moving it. Polished the hell out of it to make sure it worked smooth. Prepared a sear (from my parts bin) on a jig from Brownells, then polished all contact surfaces on the sear and disconnector to eliminate as much friction as possible. Kept the original hammer, but polished the sides to ensure smooth funcioning. I replaced the three finger sear spring with a 4 finger (bought on EE), always used a 3 but thought I would try a 4. Ended up with about a 2 1/4 lbs trigger pull with both the 3 and 4 finger spring. Used a bit grease to reassemble the trigger group to help prevent sear bounce.
Replaced the ambi thumb safety with a wider one in stainless. I don't need ambi as I can no longer shoot weak hand anyway.
For the grips I put skateboard tape on the front strap and a new set of grips from EE
Added a mag well (from my parts bin), also had to add base pads to the original mags. The Willson ten round mags do not need a base pad as they are longer. The mags with base pads look like they will fit the IPSC box fine. ( compared them to my Para standard gun.
The same slide and ejector and modified slide seems to work well with both calibers. Change over takes only a minute or two.
I can now shoot in the new Classic SS division with either 9mm minor or 40 major in IPSC.

One thing I am also going to try is see what kind if trigger I can get by using the original trigger group that came from Norinco. The parts look cheap but I think I can still get a decent trigger job with polishing and honing.

If anyone wants pictures I could take some this weekend.
