Hello my friend has been asking me a few questions because he know I hunt and shoot. However his main concern is bear defence for his family when camping and hiking. This I can't answer all though I know you can't carry a centerfire rifle in alberta during a big game season with out a tag.
His situatation is that he often camps or hikes in a provincial park (alberta) and his wife is so scared of bears it has stopped him from taking his boys. He wants a rifle or shot gun small enough to pack and also be legal. Can you carry a non res in a provincial park ? And at any time?

Where does it say anywhere you cant carry a center fire rifle in Alberta with out a tag? You can carry what ever you want, where ever you want( non restricted, and no parks) anytime of the year. Coyote season starts in october, no tag required.

If he is hiking or camping on crown land, tell him to pack what ever he wants, non restricted of course.

Careful with those bear bangers as one chap started a fire with one
trying to scare off a bear.
He ended up in court and paid a hefty fine.
Not sure what would be worse, fur or fire.

No guns in most parks.

Bear spray and learn how to use it.

What would the best gun for this application be?. You know enraged bears that attack people. A 12g, .303, discuss.

X2.... there are no laws in AB that state that you can't carry a rifle / shotgun during a hunting season without a tag / license.

Big ol' can of bear spray

I agree that bear spray is best. However, you must know what type of bear you are dealing with. Your best bet is to examine the droppings. Black bear poop has berries and fruit pits in it, is dark coloured and fairly odourless. Grizzly poop has little bells in it and smells like pepper spray!Laugh2

Tell him to take a fat kid along that no one really likes. Just gotta be able to outrun the bait.
