Shorten PAL Approval Times

17/12/11 : Passed pal/rpal course exam and sent result to CFO
06/02/12 : Received my results with a stamp
06/02/12 : Sent form with results via express shipping, signature required
09/02/12 : Application was received and signed at Miramichi
23/02/12 : Application status has just appeared online
 
I have a question for the Ontario people.

Why do you need your PAL/RPAL test results stamped by the CFO? Isnt the instructors signature enough? Just seems like a heck of a make work project?

Just curious.

its idiotic if you ask me. if they give the instructor the authority to TEACH the course, then shouldn't his mark/approval be enough? I mean it makes no damn sense. I'm just glad I don't live in ontario haha.
 
I live in Ontario and just had my PAL and RPAL approved in exactly 30 days start to finish, using the advice I read here. Thanks CGN!

It was a lot of work, but I celebrated my new license with the purchase of 5 firearms. :)
 
Hey quick question

My application for a PAL was received on Jan 31. it went up online about a week ago and today i called in to "make sure that i hadn't missed any information" with the real intention of making sure it was at the top of the pile in hopes that it would be issued next week when 28 days rolled by. Talking to the first lady she looks through everything and says "yah okay everything looks in order but i see that we need you to do a interview, do you have the time available to do that now" I was a little surprised as reading this thread made me think that PAL = automatic no interview.
No problem, i did it, but i am curious if anyone else has had this happen?

Only annoying part is that one of my references left for a vacation on Tuesday, i might have to see if i can put some money down to hold the gun I have been looking at...

you should be able to call in and get your number if you need it ASAP

It is my understanding that some instructors were signing off on a pass even if it was a fail, or not the prescribed amount of instruction. I even had a cop tell me that he knows a couple of cops who were instructors that would sign off just because they did not agree that the courses were unnecessary. So thanks to all the people who did not exercise due diligence, Ontario residents have an extra step in the process. It's funny, because of all the gun laws, the mandatory training is one that I have the least objections to.

.... but how does the CFO stamping the test resolve these problems? All tests, pass or fail, are already submitted to the respective CFO office. The same Instructors can be doing the same wrong things and the only way I can think of to solve these problems would be to have undercover people doing the course and taking the exam with "suspect" instructors.

"If you are applying for a non-restricted PAL you and your references may not have phone interviews, but if you want a restricted PAL both you and your references will be interviewed."
 
If you have your PAL number, can you go to a gun store and shop or do you need the actual piece of plastic?


Also I phones today and they said they hadn't recieved my application yet, sent it over 2 weeks ago and I get the feeling it is there. So hopefully it is there and the person I talked to couldn't find it.

It doesn't. If you go back near the beginning of this thread someone mentioned that the reason why the test's need to be sent to the CFO first is because an instructor who had their instructing rights revoked, continue to charge/teach/test students and provided approvals with the left over forms that they had on hand.

By sending the results to the CFO they can validate that the instructor is accredited and everything is alright to move forward.

At least that's how I remember it being explained.

Wrote and passed both restricted and non-restricted December 4th
I did not receive the results back until January 19th.
I sent out my RPAL application the 23 and it was signed for the 27th of January.
A week later my application was on the website.
On February 10th the applications showed that it was being processed.
I was called on February 17th and only one of my references was called.
I called today the 24th and was told the RPAL had been issued and I would see it in 2-3 weeks. I was told that I could not be given my number before I got the card in the mail. Then later today the website said my PAL had been issued.
I will call my CFO Monday and see if I can get my number.

Others including myself have gotten their RPAL number from the Ontario CFO over the phone.

Call them again on Monday.
 
so I called last tuesday to see if I could do my interview but was told it wasn't at that stage yet, and I still havent been contacted to do it. Do you guys think I should call in monday and try and do the interview?
 
Dude, you're starting to sound desperate, even to me.

I told you on Monday to give them a week or so to get your info sorted out, and then you called Tuesday, and again Wednesday (according to your posts).

Start calling every day, and they will get very tired of you. Wait 1 week from the last time you called, THEN try again. a guy I work with has had his application at the Alberta CFO since October, and he's a member of the CF. Before anyone says it, I keep telling him to call and check on it's status, but he's in no hurry he says (just bought a house).

Chill, this guide was posted to help folks avoid unnecessary delays, not circumvent 'the system' and it has helped many, but it still doesn't assure a speedy process time.

well said.....I called maybe twice and recieved mine quite fast....relax you will get it soon.

Also, once your approved why do people call to get their number? you will have the card in 7 to 8 business days max then you can spend all you want

I called once last Monday, then she told me to call back tomorrow or the next day so I did.

I'm not desperate, i'm just following their directions. Unfortunately its just a classic example of a bureaucratic organisation seeing how "call back tomorrow" actually means don't call back ever.

I'm going to forget about this, honestly waiting this long isn't even worth acquiring a firearm. Canadians obviously aren't mean to own guns.
