Gents,

Would like to know some of the better brands out there... I always seem to buy the cheapest stuff on sale (mostly federal), but I'd like to splurge a bit on my next brick. What is the best ammo for my 10/22? (in order to prep for gopher season!!)

Thanks,

Finickety these little fvckers are. My 10/22 loves the cheap a$$ federal bulk packs. The 597 will not feed anything remington. Blazers or anything CCI feeds in all of my .22's, they are not as cheap though.

There are so many "good" 22 rimfire ammo choices.
There are also several that could be classed as "Exceptional.
However, for gopher shooting, one does not need match ammo.
The Blazer suggestion is a good one, as solids go.
I would be looking at a reliable HP long rifle choice for gophers, myself.
Which means Winchester 333, or Dynapoints.
A couple of Hyper-velocity offerings out there are worth a try, also.
CCI Velocitor, Stingers, etc.
Regards, Eagleye.

Most 22s are picky about ammo. If you are serious about group size. My thoughts are, buy as many 50 round boxes of different ammo you can. Shoot 25 rounds. 5 rounds per 5 targets. Repet with all ammo.
My own gun grouped stingers and dynapoint the same. However dynapoint is far cheaper. Also you can see how many ftf, fte and duds you get per brand. You might be surprized by your findings!

choices

You might want to try some CCI Standard Velocity, many folks think that this is very accurate in many rifles and a cheap upgrade from the bulk pack products, vs buying Eley or Lapua ammo. FS

Blazer worked very well in all my semiauto's and was very accurate in my 10/22 Target Tactical.

For accuracy I am a huge fan of CCI Standard Velocity in my Svage MKII. Not sure how it would run in a semi though.

Best way to go about it is buy as many different kinds as you can, and shoot a bunch of groups. Compare them and go from there.

CCI Standard Velocity is as good as it gets without getting into the match stuff in my testing.

1. CCI Mini Mags for the best all around performance, if you can effort it;

2. AE Red box for a very descent compromise;

3. Federal value pack or Win. Dynapoints for plinking.

It is my personal experience of course.

Like someone said, buy some 50 round boxes and try them out every gun is different, every shooter wants something different. Blazers work best in my two remg. 597 and lakefields. tight goups, no miss fires, no issues

Ya what he said. All of my 10/22s like these three choices. Definetly go hp's for gophers. I really really like the new dynapoint gt's in the black box at CT. None of my 22's dislike it and its cheaper than most. It's the ammo I'm hoardng from now on. Minimags and American eagle hps are good too. But see what your gun likes and buy lots of it.

I tried every brand of 22 ammo I could get my hands on in 3 rifles - a CZ, a Norc and and Cooey 75. The best overall was the Winchester High Velocity. It gave among the best groups in all 3 rifles (not counting the premium stuff). For example, the Rem subsonic was the best in the CZ (Yeah, I know, shocked me too), but the Win was close. In the Cooey, Federal was best (don't remember which type), but again, the Win was close. In the 2009 Gun Digest, a guy did a similar test and his results were pretty much the same. In the 2011 Gun Digest, he ran a test using CCI Standard Velocity, and got excellent results. I'll have to go back through my notes to see if I had tried that and what my results were.

Hope this helps.

Lapua midas plus : groups one ragged hole. EXPENSIVE. Paid around 200 shipped for 500.

Federal champion(?) Blue box: all over the map. CHEAP.

Cci mini-mag: very decent, but not as good as lapua - but close. For the price, I'll be using the CCI for regular use.

The dynapoints I buy at CT have always been the black box GTs. I've seen white box dynapoints at walmart but haven't bought a box.
Does anyone know if there the same, just rebranded?
Sorry to jack the thread.

I also usually shoot CCI ammo. I like Stingers despite the price, but only because I can't usually find Mini-Mags when I go to by ammo. Stingers seem to be 100% reliable in my 10/22, but probably aren't the most accurate ammo I've tried out of it. I need to give the Velocitors a try.

SK Standard Plus for my CZ's and a Savage FV/SR.
Eley Match for my Martini, Remington Model 37 and as practice ammo for my custom Anschutz benchrest rifle.
Eley Tenex for the match rifle when it's for score.
Federal Gold Medal Match 711B and CCI Standard Velocity for plinking ammo.
I always buy case lots as it works out cheaper in the long run.

I like very much SK Standard Plus and Eley Red & Black for pure accuracy, but IMO these would be very expensive for gopher shooting.
Winchester Power Point 40 grain, pretty darn accurate in my 10/22 with a decent hollow point. (X22LRPP)
IIRC this ammo, was at first designed/made for Aussie hare hunters back in the day.
