Any one around Ottawa know of a productive squirrel hunting destination. Where we usually hunt all I see are the little red ones that are protected. Squirrels are everywhere except where we are allowed to hunt.
Thanks in advance
Chris

Yeah, I don't go in that forest, it seems like its to full of hikers and other hunters. Oh well
I have till September to look at a map.

I have a aprox several doz of the little folks hanging around my bird feeders. Great hunt'n dog TV channel right out the living room window.

I would put out a couple a bird feeders and then have at them when the season opens.

This may seem like a silly question, but how much meat is on a squirrel. All we have in my area are Richardson ground squirrels wrongly called gophers, and you don`t want to be eating those disease ridden little buggars. I`m also assuming a head shot is required.

The Hawkesbury/L'Original area on the Ontario side and the Grenville/Calumet area in Quebec crawl with black squirrels.
I never knew there was an actual hunting season on tree-rats.

I have eaten squirrel, tastes a lot like dark meat on a turkey. There isn't a whole lot of meat on one, the meat is ULTRA lean. If you're shooting them just aim for the shoulder and that will down them in 1 shot and have no effect on the meat. I usually use a .22LR subsonic round to limit them blowing up into pieces.

Where I'm at I've got only reds, not a single grey/black to be seen, and I live in 60 acres of mixed hardwood and cedar bog, then 5 minutes from here my parents have greys and blacks all over the place.

I shoot anything that gets into the bird feeders and throws the seed out onto the ground. I don't mind the rats feeding on the ground, but when you climb the pole bad things happen.

Less than a small rabbit, I would say two or three per person for a reasonable meal. We quarter them then slow cook them.

Have a look at the Mountain Wildlife area near Winchester. There used to be quite a few grey squirrels there.

Every living thing gets cleaned out of there come hunting season every year. I've been back there when three or four groups of 8 plus people are hunting deer.

Only place I've seen people under take deer drives with crossbows.

OP find some private land, anyone taping maple tree would probably welcome a squirrel hunter.

I can't believe no one took the bait...... Seriously look into falconry. Hunting squrrils with a female red tail hawk is a lot of fun. Most of the areas that are out of bounds for gun hunters can be hunted with a bird of prey. With very little compatition there is lots to catch and no shot damaged waste.
