I'm considering a Savage 111 Long Range Hunter in 338 Lapua. Any body have one who can offer their advise, yay or nay; pros/cons. Please only those who own one, I really don't want to know if you have something you think is better.

I'm going for the sac arms 111 Long range hunter. Pretty much the same rifle. But not as good stock but a #### load cheaper. I can't wait to buy it. Just savig up. My buddy uses his up to 8-900m and LOVES it. I'd go for I you have the money. They have great features. Accu-everything lol. And the muzzlebreak helps with recoil alot. I used my buddies and it kicks like a mule with high grain. But feels soooo good firing .338 lap lol

Recoil is already harsh on the 110BA. Depends how much you want to shoot. This is going to hurt. 338 hurts if the rifle is light.

For what its worth, I have the 110 FCP HS Precision in .338 LM and would compare the recoil to my old (sold it) Sako A7 in .308 (6lb. rifle). The 110 FCP HS is pretty light as well (10.7 lbs), but the brake is pretty effective. This is with the brake on the 338, I might agree with Kryogen if I took off the brake. Never shot the 110BA, so I can't comment personally. In fact, being heavier I would suspect it being less felt recoil than mine.

Watch out and double your ears as it's loud!

Well I will see soon enough. 111 on its way. It's light yeah, but the recoil was fine with accustock. Anyway I'll agree though. I think 110 would be alot less painful lol

The only .338LM I've shot was a Sako TRG-S, which isn't really all that heavy. I found the unbraked rifle to have recoil roughly equivalent to my .30-06 prior to receiving a new stock (original stock was a poor design that accented recoil). I personally don't think that it needs a brake, ESPECIALLY if it's a heavy barrelled rifle

I have a trg-s in 338 lapua for 13 years
now yhe barrel is replaced by a 29inch and the stock replaced by a manners mcst5 and recoil is a lot more comfortable
in its original configuration, when I was shooting the 30-06 to let the 338 cool doun, I was feeling like shooting 22lr

ps, since I shoot in sand pit and brakes are only good to spray sand in my face, I am alergic

Accustock has nothing to do with felt recoil.

Haha how do you figure?! It has everything to do with it. It's design incorporates a free floating barrel, which greatly reduces the effect of recoil pressure on the line of firing. Then it has a recoil buffer pad at the butt stock to absorb more recoil. Don't quite see how it has nothing to do with recoil?

I'm not trying to get in your face but...

Most stocks have a good recoil pad. Most rifles are free floated. If you believe all the marketing hype then I have a Tikka blessed by elves (or was that Trolls) to sell you...what's all your assets worth, maybe you'll have enough.

Stock design may help reduce felt recoil but it won't be dramatic in something like a 338 LM unless your stock is off an old P-14. A free floated barrel may have some influence but I can't see how. Maybe you could measure it with the right eqipment but I'll stand up and say no way you could "feel" it. The only way to make a big diff is a brake or weight. Shooting a big magnum more than 10-20 times in a light rifle will beat the crap out of you. Anyone who says diifferent has one of three things; an honesty problem, a machismo problem, or a nervous system problem. My big fat sissy pad allows me to shoot 40-50 light loads out of my .308 Norma Mag (believe me it's ugly after about 25). I'd call it close to equal to an accustock equiped rifle in .300 WM. If your going to shoot a light .338 LM with out a brake I think you better bring the .22 cause it's going to be a short session otherwise.

You my friend really need to do a little more reading right here before you start laughing at a comment and reply based on what you learned by reading Savage ads.

you'll note that I said my .30-06 had a poor stock design, yours obviously didnt

Although I can't speak for dero338.

I think he was comparing his .338 to his 30-06 nothing more. It's all relative, ask a soldier who has fired a Carl Gustav 84mm recoilless rifle if the blast out of a braked .338 LM is bad and he'll likley reply not too ugly. The point being regardless of how it's stocked, weighted, and padded the .338 Lapua is in a different league then your typical rifle cartridge.

The stock on my Norma Mag is a great design...just not for a magnum. I can relate to your statement. If you look at a manual a light Norma mag is a heavy 30-06 as far as velocity goes.

.

actualy, what I wanted to do, is just to give an idea what to expect to shoot 338lm light weight without brake

now, it has a very comfortable thumbhole stock with a 1 inch pad, and I can shoot a lot more before I have to take a brake

to my opinion, the effect of the stock itself in the felt recoil, will go with the comfort in the shooting position
if your stock does'nt fit you and you are not in good comfort whet taking the shot, it is just more painfull
