I have a proposition

As I consider this - I think it would be a lot more fun with two guys on the bench - competing a bit - and switching off on the heavy thumpers and discussing things. What is the weather like up there now - can we get at it right now?

Sure two guys why not, what's another lobster in the pot or steak on the grille. Evenings might be more festive as well, more opinions etc. Unfortunately I have commitments until April 1 and will not be available.

Hey Banished, that's a mighty pretty range, looks like a golf course. Almost too pretty to shoot.

Not at all, I have these toys and more because I'm smart and worked damn hard for the last 40 years, paid everything off some years back and decided to enjoy some fruits of my labor and spoil myself a bit. I've owned planes since in my 20s and use them as part of my business, the cars were a phase I went through a few years back and the guns and hunts I have been doing all my life just bigger and better these later years.
As far as being too good to be true, well I'm 56 and not getting any younger and according to my calculations I'll be 110 before I get loads for what I have now let alone what I may still purchase or build. I don't finish work at 5:00 and dart off to the range anymore for 3-4 hours I'm just glad to finish work and put my aching feet up. Weekends find me tired and sore and usually grumpy and not feeling like loading up 10 rifles and heading to the range for 5 or 6 hrs, I do it, but am liking it less and less every year. The shooting I love but the 5 trips from gun room to truck and then 5 trips from truck to bench and then reverse when I get home again I don't enjoy any more. Never used to bother me but it sure does now. Then setting up 2 chronographs recording all the data then taking it all down again.......hell I'm tired just writing about it. Besides which I bach so I have to make dinner, do laundry, clean up, dishes, grocery shop etc, etc, etc. So I figured this might be an opportunity for someone to do what they love as much as I do, at no expense beyond travel, and gain a whole bunch of experience they may never have the chance to gain otherwise and at the same time assist me with my back log, see the Yukon and maybe do some fishing, flying and drive some cool cars.
I think it's a fair trade and not "too good to be true" at all.
Gatehouse seems to think I'm taking advantage, just the opposite of "too good to be true", but I suspect he doesn't have our love of guns, shooting and all the other pleasures that go with days at the range. He probably doesn't even like guns just has them to impress friends and neighbors!!:D

Douglas

hell, I can offer to come and do these small chores and cut the grass, feed the dogs and what ever else along those lines. this would give you much more time to spend with your shooter. I don't need to drive those fast cars anymore, too old for that, and I have little interest in flying. if you have an 8 wheel wide tracked Argo and a Jeep or a side-by-side that I could play with, that would be just great. and if you could point me towards a body of water where there are actual fish to be caught and trust me with your fishing boat, wow, color me in! I didn't include offering to cook the meals, as I recall you saying that you eat very well and are a fine chef, I wouldn't wanna miss out on that! That Moose steak & Lobster, oh God, Heaven in the Yukon! And I do have a pretty darn good eye for spotting regular small town gals that would be willing to "hook", that could turn out to be a real bonas for all of us in the group during the 2 weeks. ;)
P.S. I would be heavy duty hard on your Bar products, if you don't mind that! Don't get me wrong, I'm up & adum at 5:30 AM every morning, raring to go! No cigars required, though!
Please PM me, if I win the small chore job, I'll start packing for the trip, by ground travel.

Boomer; That Yukon range is a very nice one but there can be no argument. Following photo shows the Vokes 600m Range just outside Chilliwack, B.C. - the most picturesque range anywhere.

I knew someone would chime in with a pic, that's why I said arguably the the most picturesque. Your range looks nice, but I hate cutting grass (one of the reasons I moved to the north) so to my eyes the wilderness look of the Whitehorse range still wins out.

C-FBMI, looks like you have a winner!

Got the time, but not the eyes.....

Vice Versa here, 'looky:).

An entertaining thread c-fbmi:D, smiles and chuckles.

Should you repeat the offer in 5 years? .... the, by then, retired vviking pick-up/camper will be roll'n north at flank speed.

Those old riverboats still sitting on the gravelbars??? (ca. 1976?).

Recall loading /06's at a campground picnic table, then climbing to high country and discovering just how much altitude affects trajectory and POI..

Douglas, you iz the hound of hounds.
Pay me a King's ransom to do your job,
and go burn the powder yerself.
After all, if ya want sumting dun right,
well you know the rest of the story.
Going to be a hoot to see how this plays out.

whitehorse ?

When are you going to have the time for one ??
As for me, I'm too old to have a hooker.... but can I watch ?? :D

With regard to the original post, I would love to but I have approximately 70 - some set of dies of my own to keep me busy.
I do know you have some pretty awesome toys to play with in your gun safes.

Kevan - we could go this together and visit your bro ! Yahoo ! :dancingbanana:

I suspect in 5 years it would be such a daunting task I would not get any takers, numbers could well be into the many hundreds by then. But maybe a second go around, but I'm hoping to be retired long before 5 years and have the time and hopefully the health to do it myself.
Those boats burnt and a newer one has replaced them. I think they burnt in '76.
When we sighted our rifles in Tajikistan they were right on at 100 mtrs, 3" high but I noticed about an estimated 2 feet or more higher than normal at 500 mtrs. We were at 15,000 ft.

two-dogs

hey two-dogs you wanna join the fray the more the better, grubs cheap, friends are priceless.
Have 2 argos (new), 10 ft zodiac, 9hp motor, 4 wd dodge diesel, many lakes teeming with fish, 11 1/2 ft camper with slide out, 8 or 10 fishing rods, 4 fly rods........no time to use any of them.

Interesting post to follow.
The logistics of 1 guy producing loads for 4 rifles a day. I think that would be beyond most reloaders. There would need to be a predetermind bullet and powder already chosen to work with. A quick ladder test to find clusters and then refine. There would need to be a reloading set-up at the range to tune loads. Say a van with powder, press, dies, bullets, brass and a generator to run the chargemaster!!
You sir need a team!!
Don't forget a lead sled to test the 300 magnums. Lead sled = shoulder saver.
I just wish I wasn't busy. 2013 hmmm. Quick post before betterhalf looks over shoulder!!

Two belly warmers, that must be the Northern Way!!

I have read all your posts and I think you should consider councilling for your ###ual addiction. This is a firearms site and I for one, would appreciate if you kept your innuendos to yourself. Possibly you should check out Playboy or Hustler sites, where your comments would be more appropriate.
Anyone else feel this way?

Jeez Boomer you're hard to please. Your wilderness bent might like our informal range pictured below better. The day I took this photo we were one hour from the highway and got the trucks stuck in snow three times but worth the hassle. I know, I know, there is grass in this photo but we don't cut it.

c-fbmi sorry for the hijack.

Regards; Aubrey

I have hundreds if not thousands of test loads already made up and I can load more in an evening that can be shot in a day. Already posted have Caldwell lead sled, and 4 chronographs.

Well - I talk again to the Son-in-law and reality will likely weed him out - too bad really - I expect to be free though - I'm still thinking that two shooters would be great. The wife says that we can plant the garden after I come home. Lots of things to consider - scopes - mounting etc. - range for each rifle may be different - some at 100, some 200 and some longer maybe - sighting in takes a few shots - diagnosing issues and recording the clues to diagnose and repair back home - and a tool kit for the range. Maybe an extra scope to switch out - or at least a lapping bar. A way to store targets and info - maybe a file for each gun.

Likely everyone who reads this is thinking about different things to prepare for - maybe this thread could morph into a suggestion box later.

You mentioned loading at the range - that would be a fun setup - which could be used for a favorite half-dozen rifles but - how far is it to the range? Yeah - likely better at home.

OMG, I'd be tempted to pay someone's travel just to live vicariously through them. This would make for a great reality show - "Canadian Cabana Boy", kinda like the "Bachelor", but gun, shooting & fishing related - LOL! It'd be a great show!
Then, by all means...send ME!!

anchor3593, Please see post 116. The range is 15 mins from my house. I have all the above mentioned needs, tools, screwdrivers, allen keys, steel rod, all as part of my normal range kit. I have been a hobby gunsmith for more than 35 years, my scopes are all mounted correctly and diagnosis of issues will be part of it and maybe bedding a few rifles.
Please don't take this post to mean I am helpless and need guidance to work up loads and solve gun and bedding or scope issues, nothing could be further from the truth, I just don't have the time or ambition any more to do the range work.

I missed that part where you have test loads made up. 2 guys, 14 days this might be do-able.
