Guillaume,

Congratulations on your purchase. For bases and rings and scope, you can also try a Leupold MK4 series. A good alternative also for base and rings is Near Manufacturing. Enjoy.

Depends on how far you want to shoot. Under 500 more, stick to a Bushnell 4200/6500, sightron, etc...if you want to do 1000m look at nf, etc. Quality of glass only really needed beyond 4-500m.

I have NF, S&B, Sightron ETC.
Optically the Sightron is as good or better than the Nightforce.

Right now there is a really good deal on a Bushnell Tactical at wholesalesports . It the 6-24x50. It's on sale for 599.66 . I looked out of one and was impressed . I don't think they will last long at those prices though.

that has to be the s**ttiest advice i have ever read here, quality glass is benificial at any range..

OP - what sort of budget do you have for your scope? the bushnell elite series are OK but the retical is way to thick for precission shotting IMO, the sightron seem to have great reviews for the price range (around 1000$) but buy the best glass you can afford , as the saying goes "buy once cry once"

OK, let me clarify.......you only really NEED the top end glass for 500m plus. Out to that distance the mid priced stuff (4200/6500, etc) does the job. When I look thru my 6500 vs my NF at say 200m there is some different.....but is it enough to justify double the price....no sure. Do the same compare at 1000m and it's a world of difference. To be honest I run a NF on my 223 which only does 200-300m, but it's not necessary, I could get away with a 4200.

Have not seen a Sightron......waiting to see one a friend ordered from Jerry to see if they are as good as a NF. Hope so, would love to save 50 pct over a NF and get the same quality.

Not saying he should get a tasco :)

Read this:

Optics Review for the newer Precision Shooter

Then go out and try to look through everything in your price range, either at the store or the range. I looked through everything short of Schmidt+Bender, and decided to go with Sightron; your eyes may like something else better. I use my Sightron 32x out to 900m all summer, and no issues. Sure, the extra 10x of a Nightforce would be nice, but when the mirage is strong you can't really use it anyway.

Justsomeguy I shoot f-class and there are a lot of guys shooting sightron scopes out to 1000 and doing just as good as the others with more expensive optics.

Sightron is a great scope for the money the optics are clear and the tracking is great.

I keep hearing that, just need to see one for myself, I'm from Missouri (or whatever the show me state is). Everyone around here seems to have NF....but we're known for more money than brains :)

Going to see one next weekend.....if it's as good as they say I'll be having a NF sale.

PS you're going to love your 5R......get some gold match 168 and get the best shooter you know to shoot some groupings......put it up on your wall so you know what your rifle can do. Buy some reloading gear and have a blast.

Hey 'yote......where in NB do they shoot out to 1000m? If we ever get tired of the Western life we might go back home Tobe closer to the parents.....ranges will play a factor in where we would look. Left right after school and only shooting I ever did was in a gravel pit......went to a range near fredericton once but don't remember details.

Why do you need to see one. You have already classed them as junk.

I'm going to bed.

Ummmm, sounds like you need the sleep. No I didn't call them junk, I classed them as mid range scopes based on price, which is the most common criteria used world wide for classifying things.

You'd classify cars based on price....and though I've driven a BMW but not a Mercedes I'd put them in the same class based on price, until I had driven one to determine otherwise.

I put Sightron's in the mid-range class based on price because that is all I have to judge it with. Which means my assumption is they are on par with say a 6500. I said mid-ranged ($800-1200) scopes I've seen are good out to 500M. If I get my hands on a Sightron and the optic quality is more in-line with an upper range (NF/ Leup / etc) as some claim I will gladly change my opinion based on hands on experience....and sell some of my NF's and buy Sightron's.

I call tasco and other low priced stuff junk because it is junk. And whatever you do don't look thru a S&B or one of the premium scopes...then your upper-range NF's will seem like tasco's.

It is not just optic quality it is how they hold zero, resist weather, track reliably and adjust as specified. They are not a telescope, clarity is not the end all be all when you are using a rifle.
