If I want to build a 6br off of a Stevens 200 action does it matter which short action Stevens 200 I purchase as the donor rifle?

308? 223? etc?

I'm thinking to start with I'll purchase the donor rifle then new trigger, barrel and stock as well as the barrel wrench and vice. Maybe a go gauge but i should be able to use a resized case instead right? After I see how it shoots I'll consider truing the action and bedding. Oh ya, can I reuse the recoil lug and nut?

Here is the one I built for F-Class. Stevens SA, SSS trigger, SSS recoil lug, SSS stock, bedded, TPS 20MOA base, Tac Bolt, SSS single shot follower or detach mag, bolt timed, Shilen 28" SSSM barrel. Slowly working on getting it to the range and trying to find a gunsmith to mill a channel for an anschutz rail so I could get a bipod on it.

You can reuse the nut and lug. Some will go with a stronger match ground lug when putting on heavier barrels. Not much money, can offer some benefits.

Definitely put bedding as a must do right away. No acccuracy will be had with an action sloshing around a stock.

308BAR, looking great. If you need a rail put in, let me know.

We are installing t slot rails into stocks. Works great with the MPOD.

Hope to see your rifle working at a future match.

Enjoy...

Just make sure you have a good vice and bench if your planning on using the vice/block method. I still haven't got my barrel nut loose yet. I've got the vice almost snug enough to stop it spinning but I've encountered a new problem. The bench isn't up to it task. I've got a friend who has the goods to do the job, just need to have time when he does. This weekend If I'm lucky!

Having trouble finding a Stevens 200 in .308. What other savage models will suffice?

I'm guessing the actions on the Axis models are not suitable.

What about a "Savage Model 110D .308"?

The stevens can be 308 22 250 243 7-08 they all have the same bolt face, I haven't played with the axis yet but I think they could be made to work well .
The thing I see wrong with the axis is the way the recoil lug is set up ,if I was going to build on one I would install a stevens or savage 11 style lug when I did the barrel change.
Also I like to get rid of the barrel nut and make a shoulder it gets rid of one part why not use as little parts as possible ,better chance of keeping things square imo.

BTW a 6 br is a great caliber you will love it low recoil and outstanding accuracy.

Ok I have a line on a Stevens 200 in .308. I would like to do as much of the build as possible myself.

Do I need an action wrench or is a barrel vice and nut wrench enough?

I plan on purchasing a new stock, barrel, recoil lug, trigger, base/rings, dies, brass, bullets, etc. but I need to research that a bunch more first.

I don't plan on competing with it necessarily but I would like something that is accurate from 200 - 800 yards shooting benchrest.

The main things I'm not too sure about are the barrel and chamber. I'm thinking 28", stainless steel, 8 twist, 1.25 to 0.92 taper, non fluted, no muzzle break, # grooves? or something like that.

For the chamber I really don't know and I'm open to suggestions. I'm not afraid of neck turning or tight neck chambers. Since I don't have the dies yet I can go in any direction wrt neck, free bore, etc. I'm thinking 107gr VLDs and .115" -.120" freebore. Maybe a .269 chamber for slight cleanup of lapua brass.

Any and all input will be appreciated.

The new reamer for lapua brass in 6br has a .269 nk and .098 freebore if you need the specs and reamer print # PM me.
The newer blue box lapua brass is a bit thiner in the neck than the older stuff so make sure not to use the. 275 nk reamer , I have both reamers and have swiched to using the .269 now it allows you to just skim the necks a bit so they are all uniform.

Not sure where you are located but WSS has the Savage 11FCXP3 on clearance for $330. It seems to be discontinued so probably similar prices most places.
