Is the Marlin 795 any good?

I can't believe this thread stretched out to 5 pages, maybe we should start a 795 fan club :p

Those Boyds stocks look pretty nice and the price is reasonable. i think i need some extra mags for this gun first. maybe the lebarons close to my house has some. cabelas just sent me an email that my has shipped, i feel like a kid at christmas haha

Well after 5 pages Im still debating a 795 or a 60. Maybe we should be posting some pictures.

I have to admit I'm a 60 fan. I just love the sleek profile and higher ammo capacity. I have a few arrow shaft speed loaders and it reloads really fast and easy. Also I'll never misplace my mag.
Here's my 2 marlins. A 60ss and a papoose.

This gives those who haven't seen one a better idea of what an awesome barrel profile these guns have. It's thick!

What to choose~I like the look of the 60 more, the convenience of the 795 more...so it was a 795 for me. I've never liked loading tube mags, the main reason I sold my Winchester lever. If I used mine for hunting only (fewer shots per outing) I'd have picked the 60 hands-down. As it is, mine digests allot of ammo-per-outing...so box mags are just more convenient for me.

Yeah..I was thinking about how long this thread is, odd NOT to see 10/22-related threads as the first 9/10 on this forum. :)

Thanks for the input 22lrguy. My cooey 60 gets a lot of use. Tube doesnt really bother me. I really should get a 22 with a magazine again though
Make some quick-loaders. I can build one to fill the tube in one go for $4.00. I have three of them right now, soon to have three more for the next gopher round-up.

I can fill my 60's magazine in roughly 3 seconds.

Heat is becoming a problem. :D

I use fletchless arrow shafts. One end with a nock in it and an earplug to seal the feed end. It sure does reload fast. Infact, between my 60 and my papoose, i find the papoose a pain to load the mags. They pinch the fingers and are much slower to load, and even though i have several mags, they get shot off pretty fast. My 60 with a closed bolt takes 15 rounds and i can reload the tube with 15 rounds almost, if not equally as fast as changing a mag on my papoose.

tube is easier and IMO faster... for me anyhow. Sure it's quick to change mags with the papoose or 795, but having to stop to reload them all is much more of a pain than recharging the tube.

The one credit i do give to the detach mags is you do not have to compromise your shooting position to change mags... until you have to reload them all.

Where do you get those arrows, and about how much do they cost?

I've been using some nickel-plated copper piping found at the Home Depot's bathroom section. They have a bob one the on end, I think they are for the sinks, but I found them to be the exact same size as the tube mag. I take off the bob with a razor saw, pinch closed the end, stuff a bit of wooden dowel into the bottom for the rounds to rest on so they don't deform, and cut the rest to fit 14 rounds exactly. The open end is plugged with a little rubber stopper that I stuck a steel ring through.

And to keep from losing those bits, some fishing line and an elastic band. Now just to get some camo duct tape and they'll be perfect.

For shooting at the range, I prefer the tube fed guns - especially if I have some "speed loaders" like the ones pictured above.

But for hunting (or just "out in the woods plinking"), I prefer the box mags. Especially if I'm covering a few different locations as the gun needs to be unloaded while you drive from spot to spot. It's much easier to pop out the box mag than it is to dump the tube and then re-fill it at each stop.

If you have to leave a location before your gun is empty, you are hunting in the wrong spots. :D

I have a recurve bow and do my fair share of backyard archery, and my bent shafts from my practice arrows get recycled into speed loaders. Honestly I don't know exactly what shafts sell for though... I think it's about $3-4 for a blank shaft without the nock, fletching, etc... Honestly I like your idea better, and it's likely about the same cost.

Well, I ordered my 795, a spare mag, a MCARBO spring kit and the front sight that I need to use the peep sight that I already have.

Altogether it comes to about $290. But the nice thing is, no more mods or aftermarket parts will ever be needed. Take that 10/22 owners! :D (oh wait, I am a 10/22 owner)

Once it gets here, I'm planning on doing a 3 part YouTube mini series from the unboxing all the way to the end result with accuracy reports and "how to" segments for the spring kit and sight installation. It'll be a few weeks until it's all done, but I'll be sure to post it here when it's ready.

How about this Spee D Loader? I think the cost to DIY eight tubes will be same as buying one of these. 8 times 15 rounds per tube equals 120 shots.

I was thinking about one of those, but the reviews of if have been mixed; the feeding mouth doesn't always line up, etc.

Plus, it's made out of plastic. Not sure what would happen were it to be dropped on accident a few times. My copper tubes might only bend a bit, which is easy to fix.

Anyways, with the single sticks I can wear a quiver while out gopher hunting. Something fun about that.
