UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

Ya, pretty much. I have not read of one person who has hit on target at 50 yds.

Ranch Hand shooting too high.

Question:
I understand you have a fix for my Rossi Ranch Hand .45LC shooting high. Can you help???

Answer:
Yep, sure can.

Shooting too high is pretty common with the Rossi Ranch Hand. The other Rossi carbines seem to have a similar problem.

I have replacements for the stock Rossi Ranch Hand sights like the Flat Top rear sight or the Low Semi-buckhorn rear sight - Round barrel. These rear sights are lower than the stock Rossi and any of my ROUND BARREL FRONT SIGHTS are higher for the front. These should get you in the ballpark.

Or, you can go with my Adjustable Bolt-Mounted Peep Sight Safety Replacement you can use the stock front with it.

You will need this Dovetail Slot Blank to go with it.

We'll soon learn what "in the ballpark" really means :)

If one was to buy one of these rifles,.. wouldn't you think you would be able to at LEAST get it close to shooting it where you want to,.. Why don't they just make the sights optional,.. sheesh.

Interesting idea ...

Jason,

Totally optional sights? No sights? An interesting idea ...

I could think of one good argument for the idea. If one should rely solely upon this firearm as a bear-defence option ... and if one should actually be attacked by one of the big grizzly bears around here ... and if one should somehow actually survive the attack ... it would be easier (and less traumatic) for the ER folks to remove the firearm from the one's bum :)

The same logic would also usually apply to large-caliber handguns ... if they were legal for wilderness carry here.

Those darn scary internet bears are at it again. Internet bears kill more people than zombies. Internet bears are way scarier than real bears, that's for sure.

Just joking ... naturally ...

Jason,

When it's not seriously bearactive where I live, I am now totally cool about leaving-behind the BFG that I usually take (actually, drag-around) everywhere ... and arming-up with bearspray and that cool little rifle :)

Hmmm ... it was a variation of a good joke that I'd heard years ago.

It needs to be told face-to-face among regular folks ... with a sincere and deadpan face ...

It doesn't work well here on the Internet ... with folks trying to act more ************* than what they really are :)

I looked into a 45/70, but I guess I just wanted an excuse to have a ranch hand. I think if I am in back woods in the north east, I would pack my dad's 45/70. In black country, I feel the 44 mag with 300 hardcast wad cutter would provide descent penetration. I will never use it anyway. I am a big proponent of prevention, behaviour understanding and bear spray.

Ya it's a funny joke. And probably not all that far off. Lol

:)

My landlord carries a 45-70 Guide Gun, but my BFG is a Marine Magnum with a combination of two 00 buckshot and three Brenneke Black Magic slugs.

Piece a mind :)

And there are both kinds of bears here ... no s**t ... plus cougars and wolves ... and last November I piggy-backed a totally-gorgeous Nature Conservancy babe (about 40 years younger than me) across a stream so we could photograph the tracks of a wolverine that I'd seen two hours earlier.

I was ready to be pissed-off at you for being a sarcastic/doubting/posturing whippersnapper, but you've earned a reprieve.;)

Lol, ya sometimes it's hard to tell what someone means when they are on forums. Sorry. When I can't see what someone is saying, I tend to expect a sarcastic response, and sometimes I take a pre emptive strike haha.. It's a little silly.
My thinking is, depending on where I am, the ranch hand is a little easier to toss in a backpack or keep away from the visibilty of granolas. lol. if I'm not loaded down with a pack and stuff, then my old winchester model 1200 shotgun or a 45/70. Especially when I'm in Kitimat Terrace area.
Hey where did you get the Brenekke slugs? I can't find them anywhere and now I can't get challengers at cabelas. Good on you for not trusting fosters. I really believe a hard cast bullet is better than an old soft slug anyday.

yup just ordered my 300gr hard cast gas checked bullets from bullet barn today... I am sooooooooooooo giddy! :D

Sweet! My gun should be in tomorrow. I'm ordering 50 rounds of 300 grain hard cast, 100 rounds of 240, and 20 rounds of 405 grain 45/70 from bullet barn. Let me know how you like them.

So I'm on the cusp of ownership so was only vaguely paying attention to the front sight problem all this time. I'm going to have to go back and see what heights people have drummed up to fix it, but I was digging for other unrelated stuff and came across this:

So if one were to get a sight like this for peanuts:

It wouldn't take much more than a penny (foreign of course) and some time with a file for a old-timey-for-tightwads front sight...

.

Bonne chance !

I bought five small packs of them about six years ago at a Gander Mountain store in the mid-west, and brought them home when it was still legal. They're 600 grains and in the shape of an oil-drum ... with a tail fin, I think ... and they're swaged ... not cast.

I gave one five-pack to my landlord (who was sophisticated enough to appreciate the gesture) and have fired one of the remaining 20.

They're The Holy Grail of slugs and ... like Elaine's spermicidal sponges ... are totally rationed. I hope to never have to fire one.

i think you can still bring ammo across the border. After I move to Victoria, I will have to take a trip across and get some. Their reputation is incredible. I believe challenger are similar with the tail fin.

No No No

You cannot bring ammunition across the border! No. No more.

It ended years ago. Canada has no problem ... but the U.S.A. is a whole new world. None. Nada. And their enforcement dudes (and they have plenty) regularly check Canadian cars for anything firearm-related before them cars even get close to the 49th parallel.

Sorry man, but you seem to have been living in a bubble. Welcome to 2012, and The New Order.

here are a couple pics to show how high the rossi shoots. I had the lower rear sight installed at this time, but had not adjusted the screw and 'curtain' on the sight. the guys on the left are flyers from me just trying to hit the paper at all. you can see about a 3-4 inch group near the center, believe it or not 2 or 3 went in that middle hole. Also I was aiming at the bottom of the cardboard just so you have a grasp of how high it shoots. It shot higher with the factory rear sight

Lol. I was not aware of that. Too bad. There is so much good ammo there. Garret, buffalo bore, core bon, brenneke, Dixie...

Check out challenger munitions. I believe they are the best you can get in canad with a non rifled barrel.
