A question for hunters...

Duh! If I was going to actually go "deer hunting" I'd obviously get a rifle and educate myself. I'm not asking about conventional hunting and think I made that clear when I noted that this was not an "optimal" (nor desirable) situation. I'm asking what one would use for ammo in an unforseen emergency situation where one was forced to used a handgun to hunt. How about not assming you know a person's motivation or thinking behind a simple question.

It is illegal to hunt with a handgun period. You are not allowed to have a handgun with you as you will never get an ATT (authorization to Transport) to go to your hunting spot. Get caught and you'll never own another firearm in your life.

Hey man, that thing needs fangs and foam on its mouth lol.

AND to the OP, I never said it couldnt be done, I took a muley with a 22LR once as a kid, just said it likely wouldnt be ethical, and its illegal! Even in an emergency, if you take a handgun hunting the cops will throw the book at you. Dont believe me, look at the Ian Thompson case, hunting no, emergency, HELL YES!!! but that didnt stop the charges. And I still stand by my point, you would have to be DAMN close for a clean kill as the bullet doesnt care enough energy for a reliable one shot kill.

No need to respond to this as I wont be reading this thread anymore. That is all, carry on :jerkit:

You can travel to the US to legally hunt with your handgun in which case you could get an ATT for your travel to and from the border.

A trapper can get an ATC to humanely dispatch animals caught in traps on his registered trapline, and although most would prefer a .22, a 9mm would work in a pinch. Now whether or not it is legal for that trapper to shoot a ptarmigan or a rabbit for the pot with his belt gun while on his trap line, I don't know, but if it is, then by definition there is legal handgun hunting in Canada.

If one was forced to used a 9mm glock to hunt what type of ammo would be best? Obviously it wouldn't be optimal but I'm curious about what would be best under those conditions?

As mentioned, be sure to check all federal, state, and local laws before taking your pistol anywhere, whether it be on the road or into the woods.

handgunlaw.us is a good starting point in your search.

I've got some 9mm Winchester 147 gr SXT. That's along the same lines but I'd love to get some Gold Dot 124 +p. Any one know where this can be had?

I meant things like like deer and... I did mean to eat afterwords. In fact that's why I asked. I'm thinking that if one killed a deer with a hollow point and it fragmented it might be a problem in terms of contanminating the meat.

If things have deteriorated to the point of being forced into the wilderness using a 9mm to hunt with....you have bigger problems to worry about than the LEAD ! :slap:

To give you the benefit of the doubt, if it were legal, youcould ethically take a deer with a 460 or 500 S&W or a 454 Casull, maybe a few others. If you want to know about what to take deer with, post in the hunting section please

You'd better tell all the deer down south killed with .357 and .44 mag handguns that they're not in fact dead and digested. Guys take 800lb pigs with .357 revolvers all the time, proving that it's more than enough for the deer they also kill with said handguns with proper shot placement at reasonable distances. 180gr partitions @ 1400fps is more than enough for deer, and I for one know FOR CERTAIN that I can hit the kill on a deer at 100 yards EVERY TIME with a scoped 686. A 454 of 500 cannon is not necerrary, let alone borderlin unethical as you suggest.

Modify this proven process for 9mm. 147s at 1200, within 50 yards, i believe would be fine for deer.

Just because you don't or can't legally or ethically hunt mid sized game with a handgun, doesn't mean nobody can.

On a more serious note, if I had to go hunting with a 9mm... I'd pick a 9.3x74R

Unfortunately, I don't think it would feed through a Glock...

Jeezzees.....torpedoes  after giving that bunny wabbit both barrels your teeth would be loose! :p Who made the rifle? what year? It's beautiful BTW :D

Nope...Op seems to be VERY concerned about the LEAD (how do I decontaminate my gun) thread. :feedTroll:

I know...I know... but after reading that one, the "report on toxic levels" one, and the "they were mean to me at the gun club" one... I just couldn't resist any longer. Laugh2
