UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

Kodiak Lake Hunting & Fishing, Barrhead AB. Got a shipment of Rossi 92 Ranch Hands, I bought 1 today in 45LC they were saying they just got them in and had about 7 in diff calibers... Seen all the action on the thread so just thought i'd let some of you all know... Have a good one

I'm thinking that since this a wanstalls forum, we should keep the recomedations for other gun shops in the hunting gun forum. I realize that this is the best thread on the ranch hand on cgn, probably the best thread on the ranch hand on the internet, but we should maybe not mention other dealers. Probably not a big deal but you know.

Driller212, were you using the stock front? Which new rear sight? Normal dovetail location or bolt sight?

Were you eventually able to get poa to match poi?

Yes stock front sight

low rear buckhorn sight from steves guns, it is a dovetail sight so yes in the normal rear dovetail groove.

havent gotten her hitting where I want yet. Being the dummy I am I didn't realize that elevation can be further adjusted with a screw which allows you to move what I can only call a 'curtain' which contains the rear sight groove further down. So I have to go back to the range and see what happens. If it still shoots too high I will buy a taller front sight because I don't really like how low it is even now, it feels a little odd to aim with. I cant remember who it was (candown?) who got POA to match POI by adjusting the low rear buckhorn to its lowest adjustment with the stock front sight. So I am hoping I get the same results. I will be sure to report back when I figure it out.

Hang-in-there :)

If you've been a regular on this thread, you'll know that Gary at Wanstall's now has my gun (for gunsmith-related tweaking/tuning that has nothing to do with the issue of the stupid Rossi sights).

(I enclosed the Steve's Gunz tune-up DVD ... which they could keep ... and the two switch-out parts that Steve endorses.)

I also sent him a Steve's Gunz low rear flat-top sight, a Steve's Gunz front fiber optic sight (which Steve asserts ... kinda vaguely ...is higher ... ? ... than stock), and a Skinner's Sights dovetail-mounted rear peep sight.

I asked him ... please ... to have his gunsmith determine the optimum sight configuration, and that I'd happily pay for the extra work/labour and as much .44 Magnum ammunition as was required.

So let's just wait and see ... it'll be a challenge to be patient :)

My concern? Even the best combination of aftermarket stuff/options in the world (professionally-installed) may not work.

And (of course) there's always the option of that weird-looking (and fragile-looking) Steve's Gunz peepsight that replaces the Rossi's stupid-scary safety. The geometry just might work.

Driller,

I had gotten POI close enough to POI at 25 yrds that I'm happy. Adjusting the "curtain" was the only way. And I've now decided a full stock is my next addition as keeping this thing steady is tough with the .44. Next time I get to the range I'll take some photos of my groups

Mr. Shot,

Now ... that sight-related info is encouraging.

Two huge questions ...

- What the hell does "close enough" mean?

- Very important to know ... was your front-sight the stock Rossi sight? (I'm sure that you did mention the front-sight somewhere, but I'm just too pooped to go back and search the recent thread-posts.)

I think that we're getting too fussy/weird here ... the prime reason for this exchange-of-ideas stuff is to allow us to accurately shoot (at a range of about 15 feet) assorted furry animals (large and small) before they stomp or bite us, and then maybe eat us.

Fun to chat about ... but not really statistically significant.

statistics are subjective.

Someone may take their ranch hand for a hike or walk through the bush for defense, or they may work in the bush for a living and encounter bears daily. Both of which have vastly different risks when it comes to encountering dangerous animals. Working in the bush made me realize its only a matter of time before some furry sumbeech tries to have me for lunch, and when that happens I want to have something capable of taking it down before it takes me down. If properly used of course.

Just what I think... I am a tinfoil hat wearing unicorn when it comes to animals attacking me... and for a good reason too.

Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. I've been a Pipeliner for nearly two decades and have seen up close, bears, cougars, and wolves on the right of way. and over the years have had a few really close encounters. Makes a guy cautious in the morning when starting equipment.

No problemo. We are in complete agreement. I live and work alone in a real wilderness setting and often don't see another person for a week.

And so I do everything possible to ensure my safety ... including being well-armed whenever I leave the house. I also have good ice cleats on my boots all winter. I carry a $700 PLB in a handy pocket, and pepper spray on my gunbelt. Stairs and steps have an off-side knotted-rope "lifeline" as a backup to the usual single bannister. I never walk in a horse's kicking-zone.

I'm fussy about my stuff ... which is typically money-no-object ... except for my perfectly fine Norinco .45 :) ... which is sorta cancelled-out by my TK40 and my $13000 rowboat.

So I too also always err on the side of caution :)

Personal Locator Beacons (PLB)
PLBs are portable units designed for land based activities such as hiking, camping, climbing and canoeing. PLBs can only be activated manually. Some newer 406 MHz PLBs include an integrated GPS capability, which allows GPS position data to be included in the distress signal message.

you got to be kidding this is a grate thread but I cant read every thing haha
okay I just read it thanks boomer

Carverk,

No problem ... it is a huge thread ... 2000 posts and 150000 views.

And there are maybe (?) 100 of these sweet-but-flawed guns in the whole damned country!

Hey, I don't know if Old Masset is beside Masset, but I spent a week on Haida Gwaii last summer ... and totally loved the place. We both are very lucky to live in wonderful places :)
