Has anyone tried the VLD's in a 270 Win?

The 165gr has a BC of .7381 and the 175's are .7828. Could be an impressive round for long distance targets and/or hunting.

I have used the Matrix bullets in .257 and .264 with great results on paper, but haven't had the chance to try them on game, yet. Any stories about their performance?

I'am thinking you will need a custom tube with a 1 in 8 twist to stabilize those .270 bullets.

!!! All the numbers are from a 270 WSM not a 270 Win !!!
I've tried them last summer: the 165gr works under normal condition in a 1-10" barrel twist and the 175gr needs a 1-9" to stabilize under normal conditions.

With a case full of Retumbo you a 165gr can reach 2850fps from a 24" barrel.
It's a superb long range hunting bullet but the Nosler Accubond 140gr will get 3100fps+ from a 24" barrel, is laser accurate, has less recoil and will kill any non-dangerous game like lightning.

You should definitively try the Matrix Ballistics 165gr Hunting VLD bullet but should also try Nosler Accubond 140gr bullet.

This!!
My favorite 270 bullet is the 140 Accubond.
I load it in front of VV N165, for around 3050 in a 24" tube.
I have shot game with this from 60 yards to 600 yards, and it's performance has been flawless.
I have also found it to be superbly accurate in the 4 270's I have tried it in.
Regards, Eagleye.

Will probably try the 140 Accubonds too as they are one of my favorite bullets.
Spoke to Marshall a couple hours ago and he is making me some 145gr VLD's, will pick them up tomorrow. Also has some 155gr that are not listed on the site, yet.

When I mentioned they were for a 270 Win, he recommended the 145's, but also said that he was getting some good feedback on the 165's at 2500fps.

Was scoring another shooter while Marshall was shooting. Nothing wrong with bullet and on target performance (Marshall had a great relay).

Nice guy, great support. Give him a shout and I am sure he will share the info he has.

Interesting. I wonder if the 145's a "paper only" bullet or tested to expand.

Which .257's are you shooting.? Ive got some 125's to test for when my 25-06 Ack shows up.

Have the 100gr RBT's (10s). Didn't have a whole lot of time to work with them before trading the 25-06 to a friend, but was getting some good results with a few different powders, and will carry on soon as he wants to go bear hunting this spring. Don't think I've had a rifle that wouldn't produce a respectable group with his bullets and am hoping to see how they perform on game soon.

Just ordered a 338-06 AI barrel on Friday (26" McGowan from Mystic Precision:D) and will more than likely try Matrix in it as well.

Will have a chat with Marshall about the VLD's when I pick them up later today. Website lists the 277's as hunting bullets (may be mistaken, but I think they all are?) and I'm sure they'll shoot better than I can.

PS, how's it going with the 6.5-06? Was going to message you to see if you've ever tried the 120gr TTSX. Got a great deal on some, so will have to try them out soon.

Marshall told me that the RBT and FB bullets (being bonded) are hunting bullets, but that he cannot recommend the VLD as a hunting bullet, due to a lack of testing.

Just picked up the bullets and he also gave me a handfull of the 165's to try out (plus some 142gr VLD's for my 6.5-06) and will hopefully have time during the week (if not this afternoon) to try them out.
Asked him about using the VLD's for hunting and he just smiled and said a few guys in the states have dropped elk with them (one at 70 yards and one over 800!!), so sounds like they work well.

Didnt' try any barnes, the 130 FB shot well enough and I ended up taking a WT buck with one. I havent' tested them in the Douglas barrel yet and the shilen barrel is coming off soon to make way for the 25.

I have enough faith in Matrix bullets to send a box of his 308 178 gr. bonded RBT bullets to my son to try on moose next season. Still toying with the idea of using his bonded 125 gr. 257 RBT bullets myself on moose. It'll be a major departure for me because I've been using Nosler Partitions exclusively for hunting for over 40 years. From what I've seen the Matrix may well be better!

Marshall himself told me the 165 VLD will spin in a 10 twist WSM, unfortunately I sold my 270 wizz before I could find out :(

It's true! it was a 10 twist WSM @ 865

There is scads of chat about these bullets on the below site. They have been so successful by practically everyone that has shot
them that "others" will follow suite with heavier .277 Vld bullets.
even so, like so many other things, it is still a matter of opinion. Some guys even like their animals homogenized!

I have used his Matrix 270 gr .366 bullet in my 9.3 X62 on a mountain caribou and a grizzly. You will have no problem with expansion.

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]No picture with this because I was unable to copy and paste it from my email. The text tells the story well enough anyway:

Attached is a pic of an Oryx "Gemsbok" harvested on the New Mexico White Sands Missle Range 3-18-12 by Floyd Gordinare. Rifle is a Mod. 70 Winchester in 270 WSM caliber. Muzzle velocity is 2975 fps. Bullet used is Matrix 270-165 gr. VLD. The distance is 356 yds.. The animal is hit broad side, too far back in the middle of the ribs. No matter, the performance of this bullet made up for the missed shot placement. The animal collapsed at the shot and was unable to get up. The bullet inflicted extensive terminal damage before it exited the opposite side.

The 270 has always been a great caliber but bullet tecnology has never been kind to it until now. Finally a bullet with a great BC and excellent terminal performance to match up with the 270 caliber rifles so many of us love to shoot and hunt with.
