M14 First Impressions and shoot - update post 92 - Finally Finished!

If you do, get a batch of Lapua brass, 167 HPBT Scenars & a pound of IMR 8208.

It was eye opening.

Tactical,...I have been away from the bench since 1999:eek:,.... please direct me to the burn rate position of this 8208. I can't find it in my powder rate chart.

The latest powder from dupont when I put my gear away was 7828 and hodgdon's had the H1000!!:)

Great pics and report...The Arms 18 is a very good mount for these , I mounted one with no ejection issues and like it alot. Some others on here have had to trim a couple coils off the springs in the bolt to get it to work right .

I say try it awhile with the iron sights....seeing as you have the Garand sights you may like it.

Bottom line is if you want to put a scope on DONT cheap out on the mount or scope as these rifles .

I mounted an ARMS 18 with Redfield 4x12x40 , and millet angle loc rings
(Thanks again Tacticall 111 for the recommendation )

I like hitting my targets :p I was looking at the ARMS 18 as a starting point as I have read at the top of the page that they are one of the better mounts.

I have the McCann Industries. It's higher up, so no casings dropping back in, which the ARMS 18 did with me many times.

I would not scope it if it were mine. Back in the day when I was in the US Military we qualified at 500 meters with irons. I want one. Great report with nice photos of your M14 Chicom.

What an awesome report. Glad that you are getting all kinds of positive results. What is neat is how any newbie here will feel comfortable with your report and hopefully will be encouraged to venture into the $ 400ish M14 addiction. :D

Gotta love that old school Vietnam style M16 wannabee AR15!

Cheers,
Barney

x2 on that,
I think this gun just bumped its way up to the top of my "gotta have list". Is that an average price? I see a few in the EE, to bad I just payed for a trip to Vegas or my safe would be getting a bit fuller :D :ar15:

I wont rush into scoping it thats for sure. I will do some more iron sight shooting first to ensure my last range trip wasnt luck, besides that 50m groups dont say too much in terms of overall performance.

The Norcs seem to be a great way to get into the M14 civi side without dropping 2k+ on a Springfield M1A. Just throw an a USGI stock, sights and oprod guide/springs and you should have a somewhat close clone.

Rifles are going for between $400 - $500 stock it seems.

I've got an ARMS 18 and a Vortex Razor 1-4x on the way, even though it shoots great with irons, looking to do some load development and see what the rifle's capable of. Hoping I won't have ejection issues!

That's a very sweet m14! I have had a poly tech with a usgi stock for almost 20years now and it still is shooting perfect. It has never let me down. Enjoy!:agree:

Good or bad surprised?

When your target's center of mass resembles a sieve, Your face should look like this :D

Here's me shooting at some of my targets I use for longer ranges. Sitting 300m with hasty sling. Prone I can tag em alot farther out. Best aperture design ever put on a rifle.

Very nice! My range is currently working out a plan to extend out to 300m so hopefully it will get some longer range use. Unfortunately where I am we are pretty much limited to ranges in the GTA.

What is the general consensus? (is there one? :p) Are the Norc's worth scoping?

Works for me. I have the higher end MARSTAR mount. Works well, you can still get the bolt in and out without taking the mount off.

I need to put out decent groups at 200yrds, so the scope was needed for me, but it depends what you plan to do with the gun.
