We need to stand togther

Good post, JYC, no doubt in response to the Outdoor Canada Op-Ed regarding the LGR being "enough" for hunters and rural people. Well, I know this hunter and rural person thinks that the ATT is nothing more than something the CFO needs to justify his office expenses; the classification system is arbitrary and unnecessary ("a gun is a gun"); the AR platform would make a fine hunting rifle north of the 49th, just like it does south of it; and the State has no business criminalizing citizens because of their choice of hobby.

I don't shoot my handguns much, and in truth wouldn't miss them greatly if we couldn't have them, but I would miss being able to own them. It's true they are a bellwether for our right to own and use long guns, so I got my RestrictedPAL and bought handguns on principle. It is sound strategy to keep pressing.

Standing together

As Hunters, we have pushed for the end of the LGR. That's almost accomplished as I write this.

But we still need your support. Handgun, and restricted issues for example, will be harder than the LGR to push through.

I know, many of you don't give a flying crap about handguns, but look at it this way, a firearm is a firearm. If they ban one they move to the next. We need to reverse that.
So how about helping out the sports shooters, black rifle/shotgun guys, handgunners etc?

Support the return of handgun hunting would be a good start, and I don't care if you don't intend ever to do it.

Once something like that is permitted, they lose the argument that handguns can only be used for punching paper.

Then there is the issue of all those 12.X guys, with guns that will be confiscated eventually.

How about the re-classification issue? The RCMP are re-classifying guns as restricted, in many cases, just by appearance it seems.

What if they decide to re-classify all semis?

Stand together, or fall together.

No Kiddin!!!

It will take time, but eradication of C68 must be the goal

OFAH is for hunters rights... you can easily hunt without a handgun... I am sure OFAH is all for the cause but they choose their battles carefully... and rightfully so..... they are a great organization....

We need an organization to champion this that is not the OFAH.... once they get close the OFAH will jump aboard and tip the scales....

Problem with the OFAH, is that the membership is largely Anglers, and they are not on board with the shooting community. Thus whenever an issue like handguns comes up at an OFAH meeting, it loses.

While I continue to work within the OFAH, it's a great organization on many other levels, I feel that other orgs, the CSSA, and the NFA are the ones to help us with these issues.
This is not to say that we should not pressure the OFAH to be onside. That donation call a member gets is one of the best avenues.

Would it be unresonable to think we could win if we proposed to eliminate the restricted category? All current restricted would be classified to current non-restricted standards. Say we propose a revamp of the 3 classed of non-restricted, restricted and prohibited, into just 2 classes, prohibited and non-prohibited.

a .22 hand gun for dispatching big game and shooting grouse would be great while hunting.

get rid of ATTs then you only need the province to allow handgun hunting.

and for fishing, try salmon fishing in BC on a remote stream, you will want to carry something for the bears.

I like the idea of handgun hunting but C-68 has to go. There is a large bureaucracy, I would imagine, devoted to enforcing C-68. I'm surprised that Finance Minister Flaherty does't see its demise as a cost-cutting measure.

Yup.... would love to carry my single six with the 22 mag cylinder for yote hunting... for those ones that come out 20 yards away when your scope is set to 6x.....lol

Well according to the Winnipeg Sun poll yesterday only 40% supported the removal of the long gun registry, 43% wanted to keep it and 17% had no opinion

Regionally there was big swings with 60% of Albertans supporting removal and 70% of Quebecers supporting retention

So there is no large voting block to support loosening gun laws further, especially legislatively.

Quietly and administratevly is the best bet for loosening gun laws. I say the best bet is trying to have guns reclassified from restricted to non-restricted

handgun hunting would be a good start as it use to be legal. I would like to dispatch a few Turkeys with a .44

In this battle, there is no hand gun, no long gun, no tacticool. Only firearms. We are in this together regardless of discipline of choice.

THIS is the attitude that, at least, all 91,000+ of us should take.
All firearms are firearms.
At the risk of repeating myself (probably not, since I don't usually visit the Hunting section) I am not a hunter and I do not own long-guns.

I am only a handgun paper shooter.

I have fought the "Scarp the LGR" fight from day one (including making significant donations....... by significant I mean $19.19). I have written to the Press, to Gary Breitkreuz's office (I am not a constituent but they replied and not with a form letter), to Candice, to Toews and to the PM.

I have returned their last request for donations with an annotation that I'll donate when C-19 becomes LAW and that further donations will depend on how much I can "see" them doing regarding (ALL) the other Firearms Laws and Acts.

I do expect my long-gun co-hobbyists (including subsistence hunters and farmers shooting predators) to return the favour.

Cheers

What/which guns ?

I am not a handgun owner. I shoot them whenever I get the chance. However, I do have an RPAL and support handgun decriminalization. I believe that the first step is abolishing the need for ATT's. Once we have the right to carry it anywhere we want to safely shoot it, then we can move on. I am going to be speaking with both Ray Danyluk and Genia Leskiw next week. I know that Genia will be there and I think it is Ray accompanying her. Removal of ATT's is my only topic.

ETA: Not Ray but Doug Horner, Treasury Minister. Anyway, discussion will ensue wither way.

If not for the red tape, I think two would be in my possession.
A 22 rimfire for grouse and plinking and something to replace the
bear spray which I own and don't remember to bring along.
Funny that is.
A 44 mag or something as fun.
Great post, thanks.
