I wanted to ask someone who has a lot of experience with this rifle...

Just to preface, I shoot a lot of .223 out of a mini 14, but I wanted to move up to something a bit bigger and grabbed an m305 nice and cheap.

I know it's stamped .308, but I've read a lot of smart-sounding people saying that without a USGI bolt you can really run into some problems firing commercial .308... everything from slam fires upon chambering to bolt failures due to .308 being higher pressure than 7.62 NATO.

Essentially, I wanted to hear form someone else who owns the rifle and has fired a lot of .308 without incident... That's all.

thanks.

I shoot both factory 308 and 7.62x51 out of my 2009 polytech m305 (same gun different exporters), no issues.
For an FYI my gun is pretty much stock, expect for the new stock I put on it :D

The rifle will work fine with .308 or 7.62 , I have used both as well...Crappytire sells Federal (Blue Box) 150 grain and I use it alot .

take it from a guy that's had the m14 for almost as long as i can remember- i've even got one of those EARLY m14s that came from china- the alan lever first lot- DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ ON THE NET, esp the stuff from fulton/clint mckee-it's all biased as he has his own m14 version to sell, and has written numerous articles to prejudice the buyer against the chinese- do some research on HERE if you want opinions on the m14
that being said, stick to bullets in the 147-168 range , with 173 being the highest you should shoot- you CAN shoot the ODD BOX of 180s , but unless you have the sadlak piston /gas assy installed, it's hard on the oprod and other bits - there's a very good article by GLENN ZEDIKER on M14 MATCH LOADS that i have taken as "bible" and never let me down yet- and that's over 4 different rifles( 3 usgis and 1 norc)
one the other end of the scale , if you use bullets of LESS than 140 or so you run into all kinds of failures- feed, extract, eject, and i had one dilly at 140 grains that the bolt decided to stick halfway back- my conclusion is that there's not enough gas in the cylinder- either load it hotter( which may be a mistake) or go backl to at least 150 grains-
oh, and when you get yours, put the shoulder rest( the thing that goes up on the tail) open the little door( for god sakes, use a flat screwdriver of the appropriate size the first couple of times) and pull out ONE section of the cleaning rod- then pull out the rest- that's MUCH better than pulling the tab on the oilskin bag until the works RIPS OFF

Thanks for the info guys. I'm still quite new to the sport (though already own far too many guns!) and the idea of a .308 going off in my face with a partially open bolt is not particularly appealing. Glad to hear it hasn't happened yet.

If i can ask... where in Canada do you source your 7.62x5.1 from? I like .308 cause I can grab it literally anywhere (Bass Pro, Canadian Tire, etc) but if there is a good, cheap, reliable source for Nato, I'll probably stick to that as it might be marginally better for the gun. I dunno if I want to go military surplus...

in canada the best place and cheapest is from canada ammo, he sells then in packs of 500 with free shipping, its Chinese, i've fired off a bunch and the performance is similar to the blue box federal

that business about an open bolt firing is a VERY RARE incidence, indeed- i would put it out of your mind if i were you- there's a special set of circumstances that HAVE to happen in a certain order for it to happen, and in some 40 plus years of shooting , i've never had it happen - and i have 4 of the critters- 3 usgis and a old norc- probably you could get ANY cf rifle to fire without the bolt being locked up-something like a stuck firing pin in the projected position- or something went terribly wrong- what they're not telling you is that the same thing can happen to the sks if you missassemble the bolt

What he said :D

i cant even take my green cleaning bag out anymore its so jammed in the little hole. (thats what she said :p )

did you remove the one section?- then remove the rest of the sections and you should be able to reach in there with needle nose pliers unless you have it jammed against the back of the hole- if worse comes to worse, and you really want to remove it, remove the back plate - the rear swivel should fall out when you remove the bottom screw, and the top is just a wood self tap anyway
this is assuming you've at least done the 3 part field strip - you SHOULD strip the action from the stock anyway as it makes it easier to work with- it's something you're going to have to learn to do very well as long as you have one of these -
once you get the backplate off, you should be able to get something down there to kind of snag it out- the end of a fishing pole, or a long crochet needle- even a single fish hook- then carefully pull it out - if you feel a snag, STOP, back up and rotate slightly- what you're feeling is the point of the hook sticking into the "tunnel" wall- of course, if you want to AVOID all this, take the plate off and WHANG the stock on a hardwood floor- THAT should unstick it

i havent bothered to try with needle nose pliers yet cuz i have a separate cleaning kit at home. one of these days ill strip it and remove it.

I only shoot .308 expanding out of mine, 180 grain and 160 train for moose and deer respectively. Iv come across no problems yet, oh and my rifle is 100 percent stock, nothings been changed

Well I'm off to shoot some Winchester 147g .308 in my m305 tomorrow. I'll let you know if my face gets blown off or if I have a great time!

Cheers folks. Thanks again.

Where did you read this drivel? The Norky will shoot the 308 ammo just fine. Some of us like to fine-tune these babies, just because we like to spend money. I have had my rifle for two years now and feed it both commercial and hand loads. No issues.

you need to read re 180 grain bullets- or maybe you LIKE replacing op-rods?

LOL That's handy...I still haven't got mine out!

I pulled on mine with pliers until the bag ripped. Then I unscrewed the butt plate and took out the little plastic insert and easily popped out the bag... that seems to work better.

Now trying to decide what to keep in there that would be useful. Not cleaning my rifle with that scary looking cleaning rod!
