Looking for some hen's teeth.. The proverbial S&W 625 Revolver...

Australia has a 4" ban as does California for non-grandfathered revolvers. I think Mass. does as well.

In California a registered, grandfathered 4" is Worth more than a 6", in Canada it is opposite.

You didn't want that one, Dan. It was way too inexpensive. Not many rounds through it either. There will be another $700 one we can fight over on the EE, don't worry! I promise, if I get another one, I won't stupidly sell it ... again. Just one more.

Thanks for all the ideas fellows!... I did figure that i could buy a prohib.. and get the barrel changed just need to get a hold of a S&W smith that will do it for me..

I do know about the 5 " barrels.. that is the model i would like but like i said.. Hen's Teeth

I am shooting IDPA... I do have a 686 now which is SSR... but i would like a 625 which would be a ESR.. Can use a 625 or a 610.. but both are hard to find..

Thanks anyway for all your input..

Unless you can cite a reference I have to call :bsFlag:

My cousin lives in CA and when I was down there a couple of ears ago nobody (local competitors at an international level revolver match, gun shop owners and many others) knew nothing of such a law......

The guy was asking $450. Which is reasonable for a prohib you can't pass on to your kids. - dan

A quick look through California firearms regs shows no reference to a barrel length restriction for handguns. Short barrelled rifle and shotguns are defined and prohibited but I can't see any restriction on handgun barrels.

Call PC

S&W is not listing any 625's in the 2012 catalogue. So it appears that only a substantial order would motivate them to make some.
Re-barreling is problematic as S&W policy is NOT to sell frames, cylinders and revolver barrels to individuals.
Here's a solution depending on how bad you want one. Call the S&W Performance Center and have them build you one. Get exactly what you want.

I'd like to know where the popular misconception that California has a berrel length restriction came from.....

For a while I thought it was because of some hunting regulation... since many states have a 4" minimum requirement for handgun hunting...

Oddly enough, the 4" and 4.2" stainless Ruger are on the California approved handgun list... but the blue 4" version is not

Would the 5" Lew Horton that I've been offered command the $1,500 asked? I told the seller I'm interested but a little cash short, thankfully he's not in a hurry.

Sorry but no, I'm taking this one. ;)

I don't think the S&W Performance Center will do custom barrel lengths; at least they didn't when I e-mailed them a few years back.

My understanding is that S&W will do special orders from distributors for at least 500 units that use a standard frame and cylinder.
