Parker hale Deluxe

I think they're an under rated rifle, in a hunting rifle I like them. The problem is you are competing against other sporters and you can buy a remington700 SPS for approx 550. The PH would max out at about 450., depending on condition.

You couldn't give me a PH rifle if it is the detachable magazine model.
In 1972 I bought 2 brand new Paker Hale Safari Deluxe Model rifles with the skip line checkering, roll over cheek piece, gold plated trigger and the Wundhammer palm swell, a .243 and a 7 RM for $119.95 each. Oh they were a thing of beauty to a 17 year old!!!
I bought 2 new clips for the 7 mag in the first year, they have a nasty habit of dropping the magazine every time you fire them with a full magazine. Seems to me they were about $15.00 bucks back then but a box of shells was only $5.00, and I only cleared about 15 bucks a day. I even took it back and they gave me a new rifle which did the same thing after about 50 rounds, same as the first one. I hated that f*****g rifle. The 243 only did it a couple of times and I never lost the clip for it. Within the first year I traded them both off on 2 new Rem 700 BDLs and have never looked back since. As I recall they shot pretty good, and I did buy another (used) a couple years later in a 308 NM but it had a floorplate so no issue. It shot well too as I recall.
In years following I found out this was an ongoing problem with the PH detach mag model with any cal larger than a 243.
So all I'm saying is be warned, I don't believe they ever fixed the problem.

That sucks c-fbmi.
I've owned a few other the years and never had that same problem at all.
In my opinion any decent mauser actioned rifle is worth more than $500 and better built than most new factory rifles...... but that's just my opinion.

The PH detachable magazine system is a detachable magazine system. That is the best that can be said for it.
If you have one, don't lose the magazine you have.

Just a thought; Since they are PLENTY in Canada, all these P-H thread should be put together into one... it would provide quick answers to many, as they seem to all ask the same questions...

drae,
To me, the stock looks like it was refinished (varnished) as it should be oiled, and look much darker than it does (line the border lines of the checkering). Easy to fix; just strip the actual finish and hand oil the stock (please, do not use sandpaper!), or just keep it that way if you like it.

Your rifle can be dated, but to do so, you need to post a picture of the Birmingham proofmark of the rifle, usually find under or on the left side of the barrel. It should look like this;

Then, here's an ad of the DeLuxe;

Mine is varnished (or whatever the original finish was in the early 60s) and has the receiver cut-out and the stripper clip slot making it a WW 2 surplus 98 action. I have the same stock (I have not seen many of these exact stocks), but mine has the two position (modified from its original three position operation by PH I believe) flip safety on the bolt.

Are they a quality rifle? Unless they have not been properly maintained/stored, and assuming the barrel is not shot out, I would say yours is a very good quality rifle. I'll take it. ;)

Yes they're good and well made rifles. Some early ones (as pointed above) were made on whatever receivers they got (usually scrubbed ex-military), later they were made with FN actions and finally, most of them were built on Santa-Barbara actions (they usually can be identified by the "SPAIN" stamp on the left side of the tang (see below). These Santa-Barbara actions were made in Spain at La Coruna arsenal (the plant is now owned by General Dynamics since 2000) on ex-FN machinery.
They're as good as any other modern Mauser 98 and good enough for the Canadian Armed Forces Snipers, as 'til today, they still use them.... after 40 years of hard use under the C3 and C3A1 names... but they're being slowly replaced by PGW products.

Just make sure the actions screws are tight so it won't develop "the Mauser tang crack", or bed the properly. Also check the stock thin web between the trigger and mag well for hidden cracks as it's also a symptom of the "crack" phenomenom, common to most staggered column magazines Mauser 98 actions.

I've had a Parker-Hale Safari in .308 for 42 years. It's been a great, accurate, powerful rifle. It's not as accurate as it was when it was new but still will put 3 shots into an 1 1/2 inch group at 100 yds.

I guess my main question would be are they any good, is the rifle quality?

Yes, they are a quality rifle. I probably have a half dozen or so, various vintages, with surplus receivers to Spanish ones. The earliest commercial versions are my favorites, but that's mostly esthetics, there is no real functional difference. I have a couple I will be passing on soon,that I bought for projects I will never get around to. - dan

Good quality, all steel and walnut stocked old school hunting rifle.

Mine was very accurate, I sold it while thinning the herd and I shouldn't have.

i got given a 30-06 parkerhale. in trade for some work. scope was junk and the stock was cracking. i put a boyds stock on and a weave k6. the bolt is sloppy and not very smooth. but i shoot 1" groups all day long with 165g sst.
was suiting i got my first kill with is when hunting with the guy i got it from. he didnt belive me that it was the same gun.

These are excellent quality rifles for the buck. I've have had several and they were all great shooters. I have a Parker Hale Safari De Luxe in 308 Win and its super accurate. If I do my part I can get under 1 inch groups at 100 yards. These rifles are better quality then the ones you can buy today and I would never sell it. I am planning to get one in 7mm rem mag:D.

I've also had a Midland Model 2100 in 270 Win. It shot accurate but the quality was not there. The stock was cheap would and it had some plastic parts. Stick with the Parker Hales and don't look at the Midlands.

Expect to pay $300 to $500 all depending on shape. The De Luxe are they higher grade model.

The Deluxe is actually the mid grade from PH. The Safari Super is their top of the line model.

Don't want to bug you, my friend, but it's the 1200 Presentation which is the top of the line model. Far from being common, though.
