Got my heart set on buying a new 870 express mag and outfitting it with a Boyd's custom stock...any objections? Suggestions? Are the 870's still a good gun?..I have one that was made in 1968 and it's never missed a beat.

You would have had a wingmaster in 1968 and unfortunately it may look like today's express but that is where it stops. The quality and fit of today's express is not even in the same playing field as your old wingmaster. Not saying a new express will not work for you and go bang when you pull the trigger just it will never be as smooth and of the quality your old 68 was.Early express were much better than what they make today and normally give no problems at all.
New wingmasters are still real good quality but expensive. take care

Your new express MAY need some tweaking after you get it but it will be a dependable gun. There are lots of good 870 mechanics on this sight including me and 3 macs 1 etc that can trouble shoot any issues that may arrive. Enjoy it!

i have an express from when they first came out whatever it was mid late 80's i can't say anything bad about it wood stock, 3", 28" barrel been used as a paddle its been a good gun through the years.

My Express is 3 years old. It has never let me down, hunting, trap shooting..... My cheapest gun and yet when I go solo camping, this is the one that always come with me.

I've owned 2. Both worked perfectly. Both, and I look after my guns, were VERY prone to rust. Drove me crazy, but if you can put up with that they're good guns.

I have an 870 express combo that I picked up some time in the nineties. It shoots and swings well with the vented waterfowl barrel, and shoots good groups with the iron sight smooth slug barrel. I've never had jamming or rust issues with mine, but i keep it lubed well.

My old express runs like a top. I've put hundreds upon hundreds of magnum waterfowl loads through it. The only thing I did to it was swap out the J-lock safety for one out of an old Wingmaster and put on a set of Hogue stocks to replace the mystery wood.

I have an early express ( jeez we talk about them like they are pre 64 winchesters) and it is great. The mystery wood is solid white birch. Not pretty but tough. I let a coat of kroil sink into the outer surfaces of mine and no more rusting. Just a tip.

I bought one 3 months ago went well in the marsh and patterns very well, the thing I dont like about it is the crooked choke, but hasnt effected the POI or the pattern, its just crooked.Exept for that issue, the gun operates flawlessly, nor any rust was observed though i keep it lubbed as all my guns

I'm leaning toward a Benelli Nova now...

For goodness sake, WHY!?!

Kidding, kind of. If you've handled one and love the feel, then that's up to you. You'd be giving up a LOT in terms of the 870's modularity, design, and track record. The 870 Express IS rough and rugged, as others have noted. Those concerned with function will not be disappointed. FWIW, the Benelli seems like it's most of the way (price wise) to a new Wingmaster, and significantly more expensive than good condition used models.

Just bought mine in Bass Pro (after visiting local gun store, nada) I never had a shotgun and wasn't going to blow more than I wanted to, if new then I had settled for Rem 870 due to its track record.

Just cleaned, put together and in safe storage. Now hunting license.
