Hmm 7mm-08 or 6.5x55???

I prefer 6.5x55.

As soon as I start looking at 7mm anything, I immediately start thinking it would be just that bit better if it was necked up to 30 cal.

For some reason I don't do that with any 6.5.

So if you load a .270 to factory 7mm-08 velocities, then the 6.8 mm round wins due to the extra case volume?

:stirthepot2:

you are confusing things ......

I DID NOT SAY VELOCITIES ....... i said the SAME PRESSURE LEVELS .

in your comparison of the 270 and 7mm-08 ...... factory rounds for both cartridges are loaded to the same , 52,000 cup max pressure ........

yet which one is faster and has more power ?

the one with more fuel to burn .

same thing with the 6.5x55 and 7mm-08 .

load them to the same pressure levels and the larger of the 2 cases will produce more velocity and power .....
the 6.5x55 just happens to have the larger case .

Why not do some shopping and find the most accurate and best value? We all know there're so many calibers that are so close to each other that it simply comes up to availability and personal preference. The most important points would be to find an accurate, quality, well fitting rifle in the price range. I think they're both cool calibers... =]

You will not be disappointed with either. I have both and have had great results. I have taken more game (up to elk) with my 6.5 but that's mainly because I've owned it for about 20 years vs the 2 years for the 7mm 08'. My Daughter who is 5" 3' and 18 years old hunts with both and she really doesn't find much difference between either in regards to recoil. I reload and get better results out of my swede but I really don't believe a dead animal cares much about a 100 fps here and there.

Someone has already said it but find a rifle hat fits and shoots well and be less concerned with which of the 2 calibers it ends up being. She'll be happy with either. Both have impressed me with performance on game.

The 6.5x55 is WAY cooler than the 7-08...everyone knows that!!!!!!!

Seriously, no real difference I am partial to the 6.5 bullet in either the Swede or the 260 rem. If you wife has small hands the Tikka may be a bit of a problem, I bought my future Daughter in Law a Savage Youth model, the pistol grip on my T3 was too big for her.

This may be true if all things were equal, however all things are not equal. The larger bore diameter and slower twist work in favor of the 7mm-08 in terms of velocity. These two cartridges (as well as the 260 Rem) are so close in terms of performance that you would have better results choosing one over the other by basing your decision on availability of ammo and components, choice of rifles, or simply personal preference. My opinion only.

How about a .308, loaded with 130 TTSX, use H895 which can safely be loaded to 60% of max and work up in power as she can handle it. Then she can shoot deer, moose, bear, and elk at reasonable ranges. Let's say under 200m, which is a long shot for a new hunter.
but I digress.

Between those two, I would go 6.5 everyday. Excellent bullet choices, great BC ad SD on the 6.5's. You are going to handload I assume, then the anemic factory 6.5x55 stuff is not a factor.
You can go up to 175 grain bullets in 7mm, but the 08 case doesn't hold much powder to drive those with any real velocity. the 7mm-08 shines with a 140 grain bullet and the 6.5 does too!!!

The Swede is getting alot of love here... but just to be ornery (and because I love her) I am going to say get the 7mm/08 cause she won't let you down in a pinch... and she is tender on soft shoulders.

I'd only choose a 7-08 if I couldn't find a rifle in 6.5x55.
Having said this I own two 6.5x55. :D

6.5x55 ammo is not on the shelf at ones Canadian tire but it's not that hard to find.

My advice is first find a rifle that fits the shooter then try both cartridge types and go from there.
