Hey guys. I been shooting different loads out of my Mossberg 535 12g 22" barrel and Turkey choke (.670) and full choke

I started out with Federal Flitecontrol 3.5" 2.25oz #5

20 yards I can shred a piece of 8.5x11" sheet of paper with about 20 pellets in the turkey head

40 yards only 20 pellets on sheet of paper, 5 in the kills zone.

I tried Winchester 3.5" 2.25oz #6 and Remington 3.5" 2oz #4 and no better results.

I have a 28" barrel I still need to try, have Mod and Imp mod chokes as well.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to improve the pattern, Or any shells to try next. I think I want to try 3" or 2 3\4

First shot with the 3.5" I smacked my nose with my hand and just about broke my nose LOL blood all over my gun and hand. Rookie move I know, But JESUS wasn't expecting that. So used to trap loads LOL

What kind of turkey choke? Factory? You should be able to do much better than that. My 20 gauge will put 40 pellets on a piece of paper and 18 in a turkey head at 40 yards

Try some 3" shells, winchester supreme elite 3" #6 are my favorite in 12 gauge though they aren't cheap. Also some guys claim to have better results using a slightly more open choke with flitecontrol wads.

As far as recoil, I feel your pain. I've never lost any blood but have caught my thumb on my nose and saw stars/felt teary eyed with 3.5" turkey loads. Even my 6lb 20 gauge is peppy when flinging 1 5/16oz of lead.

Yes all Factory Mossberg Accu-chokes. I've never seen a pattern open up so much from 20 to 40 yards. Even at 30 yards its not all that great.

Going to pick up a few different brands of 3" shells and try it with all my chokes and barrels.

I used to shoot Federal Flitecontrol 3" #5 out of my 870 with Undertaker turkey choke. Shot many turkeys with it at around 30-40 yards. I might have to go back to old faithful.

I went through the factory choke, then 2 aftermarket chokes before I found one that worked best for me - "the undertaker .665' IIRC. This is in a Stogaer (sp?). I can put enough in the kill zone at 40 yards now.

I find 3.5" shells too punishing and the muzzle jump is unreal. 2.75" I find don't have enough distance. I settled on Rem turkey shot in #5 in 3".

I had just about the same experience. I tried out my new Remington 870 Super mag with a full turkey choke. At 30-35 yards with the Remington 3-1/2" Nitro Turkey #4's I got maybe 2-3 pellets in the kill zone. And, oh yeah baby those are painful. No bloody nose but a slight sore cheek. I seemed to have more pellets in the kill zone 4 to 5 with the Winchester Supreme High velocity 3" #5's and a lot less recoil. Same deal with Winchester Super X copperplated lead shot turkey loads 3".
Now I think I was aiming a bit high because there were many more hits in the chest area. So I'll try to go at it one more time and see what can be improved.

Have the same gun and purchased a HS Strut turkey choke with use Winchester 3" 2 oz 6 turkey loads. Stick with extra full turkey choke and maybe use a rest while patterning. Really no need for 3.5". That combo for me kills them just fine. What type of turkey choke you using? Is this the extra full that Mossberg gives you. I think that choke sucks. Buy a new choke. The HS Strut was cheap and kills birds for me up to 45 yards.

I just bought some 3" Winchester 1 7\8oz #6 and Winchester Supreme 3" 1 3\4oz #5.

Going to try them in my Mossy 535 and 870 right now. I'll post pics with results in a bit. Going to try all choke barrel combos.

I might have to buy a new choke if I don't like this combo.

Not the least impressed. I'm going to have to buy another choke and try it again on the weekend. I can feel the tightness in my cheek already, Prob be bruised tomorrow LOL

Jellyhead choke and Winchester 3" 6s. The black boxes turkey load. Those shells have patterned well in pretty much any gun/choke I have seen.

I agree with waterfowler. I shoot Rem Heavy Hitter Turkey loads they are a bit more $ but worth not missing a bird. The Kent Turkey loads worked great for me as well. I am shooting a Browning Gold, Undertaker Turkey Choke, 3" shells.

I use my custom .650 choke in my mossberg. I've used 3.5" 2oz #4s and it kills (at both ends). The last couple turkeys I've taken have all been cleanly killed with 7/8oz #6 shot in a fixed F choke sxs. Yes 7/8oz. Crazy aint it. Your typical trap gun with an ordinary trap shell loaded with #6 to be legal is most likely your best turkey gun. The goal is to shoot them in the head. A nice dense pattern of small shot does wonders. No beating up of the face and hands and shoulders. No real muzzle jump. I admit my skeet loads are 1350fps but they pattern very well in any and all of my guns. With my custom choke I can get every bb of the 7/8oz into a 9" circle at 30 yards.

Wilson precision. Com. He custom builds chokes. Check out his card cutters

When I feel strong I carry my 10ga sxs 32" barrels f/m with 2 1/4oz # 4. That baby got bark and bite

In my 870 I use the Winchester Turkey loads 3" #5 shot with my 26" barrel and Rem turkey choke... excellent pattern and highly recommend it... haven't missed yet [knock on wood] :D

Late 90, i got that .665 Xfull choke at that time i bought a case(240 rounds) of 10 rounds #5 copper plated 1 7/8 onces buffered loads, the one in the camo boxes, got one at 52 paces, patterning is 12 pellets in the killing zone at 50 yard, this choke-ammo-11-87 triplet is a real turkey slayer but in the last 10 years did not shoot one pass 15 yards so so the rig is kind of overkill but you never know when you will have a life trophy gobbler hanging out just at the fringe of the 50 yards mark... JP.

Best turkey chokes are Indian Creek and Kicks Gobblin' Thunder. Try one of those with lead only and you'll kill turkeys to at least 50yds. That's been my experience fwiw.

Would you happen to know the ID of these? Just curious how it compares to the Rem turkey choke.

Nevermind I found them. Here is a dimentional comparison of the chokes:

Kicks Gobblin - available in .665 and .655
Indian Creek - .665
Rem Turkey Super Full - .660

Kicks Gobblin in .655 is tightest followed by Rem then Indian Creek.
