So whats the deal? its one of the most prolific cartridges on the planet, with enough punch to be adequate for mid sized game.

I'd pick one up in an instant if a company produced a budget priced bolt rifle (Xs7, Axis, 200, etc).

Off the top of my head we have for bolt guns

Savage Scout
Ruger Compact
CZ compact

Whom else? None of those are "cheap" options either.

Likely 'cause it costs as much [or more] to make a bolt action rifle in 7.62x39mm as it does in one of the more traditional hunting ctgs like .270, .308 Win, .30-06 Springfield etc.

Don't get me wrong, I like my Ruger 77 mkII in 7.62x39mm, although it wasn't exactly "budget priced":

Supply and demand. Not mant shooters or hunters that interested in the cartridge. I think that it is a nice little cartridge for bush hunting whitetails or even a black bear. I like the CZ 527 Compact in that cartridge the most!

The only benefit to it is cheap surplus plinker ammo. If you have to pay the going rate for factory ammo, or bullets powder and brass, you may as well go with any of the other hindreds of suitable calibres.

Corrosive milsurp ammo is only an issue if you never clean your rifle. :D

Mind you it's probably not healthy for one in the long run to be around the mercury and such.

For me I reload all of my hunting ammo with Barnes TSX anyway.

Personally I'd like to see a rifle manufacturer come out with a single shot break action rifle in 7.62x39 with iron sights for under $200.

Probably because it's in the 30-30 power range. Most people want something like a 308 or 30-06 for hunting if they are using a bolt action. I'm guessing the 30-30 is only still used because it's in a levergun.

I saw a sweet lil bolt action at a gun show a while back, I think it was a CZ, I was interested in it, but my oldest son talked me out of it for some reason, can't remember why! I think if I see another one and the price is right, I'll take it, not sure why, but it does interest me! I do alot of back yard bench rest shooting, it should fit in quite nicely, I believe.

I believe Baikal/Remington has been making one for quite awhile.

Remington marketed a mini mauser in 7.62 x 39, the 799 I believe, but has been discontinued. I think Zastava made the actions for these, or possibly the entire rifle.

Zastava made the entire rifle. Remington took the ugly wood.off and put much no er furniture on it. Not a bad rifle and there are still a few around if you ask. I went to Milarm looking for a Norinco, told them I'd rather have a 799,but couldn't find one, they went in the back and brought one out. Done.

NEF/H&R makes the Handi-Rifle in that chambering. And while it's not as low as $200 up here it's tolerable at around $300.

I have a Baikal single shot in 7.62x39. While not in the same class as a Ruger single, it still goes bang and kills rocks! It was around $200 new from EPPS.

Just the other night I was reading about the development of the 30 hewett which was originally used in a lever gun as a single shot but then became somewhat popular as a big game cartridge in the T/C Contender.

The comment was made that if the 7.62X39 had been available there would have been no need to build the 30 hewett.
