Looking for a new semi auto

I can't comment on the Mossberg, so I won't. However I do own a Savage 64 and did own a Remington 597, sold it to get the Savage. Of these 2, the Savage wins by far. First trip to the range, it is 100 % more accurate, not nearly as a pain in the ass to strip down to clean, a much simpler trigger group, better quality factory mags. The trigger on the 64 has about 5/16" of light play in it but it is lighter and breaks nicer than the Remington did. The only thing that the Remington had going for it was the nicer stock, but even that took a bunch of sanding to get the barrel to float properly and the last shot hold open, which rarely ever works unless using the factory 10-round mag.

Savage. The better quality gun from the better quality manufacturer. And, they are Canadian made.

I have a Marlin 795 and wanted another semi so I picked up a Mossberg. It lasted one range trip and I got rid of it. I since picked up a Marlin model 60 and am very pleased with it. The 795 and the 60 are very accurate and reliable rifles.

Go 10/22, because with time you will want to modify and it's easy with the Ruger because there is so much after market parts and kits to change it's look and performance. Like the marauder that change the look but also how you hold it, making more confortable or easy handling. Just to mention one. Do a google search on the Ruger for pictures, you will see what can be done with that thing. But be careful it's addictive.

marlin 795 semi .22lr synthetic stock plus scope $189 seems to be the goin rate, i've looked everywhere and it is the same prices . i plan on getting one in the very near future. scope is a fixed 4x20

thank you for a good reveiw of the 795 i read so many comments on it and never any thing bad. just one question what ammo do you use in the 795. just wondering where some guns don't like certain ammo. like my old man's cil mod 300 hates fed's and cci but loves the winchester hallow point.

I love the opinion threads...may the mightiest keyboards prevail!

I adore my 64's..I've owned many, loved 'em all. A rifle that has been in production that long (50+ years) must have something going on!

That typed, from your list for money in, and fun out, really can't beat my 597. A fine rifle. Less expensive than a new Savage. I've read of folks suffering issues with theirs, but mine has been awesome. Of the .22's on your list, this is also the "fullest figured" one, and feels like a real rifle.

Others have offered up Marlin as an alternative to your list (60 and 795). Also awesome rifles, long production run. Marlins outsold the 10/22 for deacdes for a very good reason.

The 10/22? Won't waste a lot of keystrokes on it, nor a nickel on them! They are not "tolerated on the premises". My experiences have been negative, and wouldn't own one. They have "their" market for sure. Other than being able to spend more over the counter, and be able to play "barbie doll" dress up, I just can't see a use for 'em. (and I wasn't going to waste keystrokes!!!)

I'm down to about a dozen .22's now!

EDIT: add-on

I don't have any real 702 experience, but the "older" Mossbergs I've tried were all AWESOME .22's. Very accurate semi's

Thanks Camster, definitely a well written post. I've priced out a Marlin 60 online shipped and its in the range I was looking for but have yet to hold one. I'm planning a trip to Vaughan to go to bass pro shop to check out their selection, they apparently have the model 60 where no local stores have them.

The 64f is still tempting though so we'll have to wait and see!

...be able to play "barbie doll" dress up, I just can't see a use for 'em.

Don't underestimate the value of barbie doll dress up for some of us dads out there. "Tacticool" .22s and reactive targets have helped me keep range time with dad more exciting than Call Of Duty 4 online with their friends ;)

Hehe the way I recall my youth range time without dad was much more fun then both. Of course call of duty didn't exist, but super Mario was pretty good? Wasn't it?

Heh, I'm glad I didn't have the kinds of games and electronics kids have today, I'd've never left the house...

lol

True. You do what it takes to inspire the next gen. If that's what captivates 'em. Paint a stock pink, or put "Cars" stickers on it. An acqauintance has an SR.22 for his daughters. They love it! All good...but for you: Function over form? Function with investment on already pricey over function?

Proud [single...any CGN gals?]Dad here too. M'boy (8) has a pellet gun that he can use when he can #### (whew...not yet), and I've actually bought ugly Cooey stock, cut down for him ...I saved the "chunk" as m'Dad did.

I don't get the vibe "OP" is someone's young 'un picking out a rifle... he's one of "us" looking for something that will work, and hit something.

For my purposes the most useful attribute a semi-auto rimfire rifle can have is feeding and ejection reliability using high-capacity magazines. That's why the only ones I still own are 10/22s and SR-22s. Obviously everyone has to prioritize based on their own needs ;)

My rem does that nicely. It's a "way big" rifle for my 8 yr old, and synthetics don't loan them selves to cutting down....

OP
The "other" option is to explore "unmentioned" semi .22's...
Springfield87A/Savage6A(and a bunch of other names) are cool .22's (LONG barrel, gills, bolt stays open until trigger is released, can be "switched" to work as a bolt action), Winchester has a few fine one's in it's history. There's a CZsemi out there (512?) that I'm dying to try, Voere's pop up oncce in a while..

Obviously, I have a weakness for .22's, and even after 25 years of shooting them, there are still too many untried!

go try a Marlin 60 (tube fed 14 shot) or a Marlin 795. Both sub 200, and very accurate.

Great size and weight for a kid.
