Bought a cheap savage 17hmr, I think my 22 is going to be shelved for awhile. I am surprised how such a small caliber can laser beam so far. I hit 12 cans, one after the other at 150 yards, not sure if i could do this with my 22 even. Tried two brands of ammo, federal vmax and cci, the federal was better in my opinion. I think my sako 300 winmag just got bounced to number two on my favorite list.

If you dont have 17hmr, sell your 22 and get one!

17HMR is so expensive you can reload bazooka ammo for less! Won't someone please think of the dollars?!!!:stirthepot2:

It's not expensive, it's the second cheapest gun I own to shoot. Spending 30 bucks for a 100 doesnt sound so bad when you compare it to my 45. 100 rounds lasts a long time, in my pistol 100 rounds lasts 5-10 minutes.

Hobbies cost money

Reloading ain't cheap for me, I can make enough to buy at least 3 boxes of 17 her before I could load 50 rounds of anything else, never mind the equipment or learning curve. I only load custom 22-250 ammo (I load em slow) for coyotes.

223 costs me ~35 cents a round hmr costs me ~30 cents. Not much difference in price but lots in performance. I still enjoy both though

Savage just introduced a 17 Hornet. Should be cheap to reload, probably similar cost to 17hmr ammo. The biggest difference is velocity, factory ammo clocks in at 3650 fps with a 20gr bullet. Apparently similar trajectory as a 55gr 223 out to 400 yards.

Bullets are $166/1000 from Higginsons. SR primers are what? $35 per thousand, plus say $30/1000 for powder, not including brass, is $230/1000. 17hmr is around $300/k and sometimes can be found for $200/k

Welcome to the joy of a .17 hmr!

You should try out the hornady 17gn ammo. Works good in a lot of savage rifles.

I have two .22's that still get used for plinking. Ones a single shot with peep sights, other is a semi 597. there not near as accurate tho, just fun bang sticks. When I want to shoot for accuracy or go small game hunting, I take the .17 hmr with out a second thought. You can't beat it!

.22 mag hits harder..... To about 50y and than its velocity drops like crazy and there matched. .22 mag is a good round but to say ur out performs the .17 hmr is false.

Wind drift, @ 200y the .22wmr is more affected than a .17 simply due to velocity. The slower round is pushed around by the wind longer.

I consider max effective range of a bullet the distance Untill it slows to the sound wall. 1200fps. The .22 WMR - 150y. .17 HMR - 300y.

Both kick ass on gophers regardless.
