new hmr

Never understood the comments about being "too expensive". It's not a plinker. It is a specialized long range rimfire that is extremely accurate and fills several niches. For one, no pelt damage on my trapline. Fox, beaver, otter etc. Not as heavy handed as a 22 mag, but much more accurate so placling a shot is nothing. And clipping the odd hare at 120 yards plus isn't nearly the challenge it was with a 22lr. Hell...I even take grouse with base of neck shots with no fear of breast damage...if I do my part. Plus, unlike a .223 or hornet, I had one, I'm not grabbing for earmuffs everytime I see an animal. My ears have had enough damage, and the 17 in the open dosn't hurt like even a small centerfire.
Another advantage is I can't reload for it. Otherwise I would be. And spending less time enjoying shooting it.

Best,

Well if the velocity is less, and the bullet drop slightly more, perhaps a bit more wind drift, I fail to see what the selling feature of this round would be? I mean, I doubt you would see any difference compared to the 17gr bullet in any application I can think of.

Maybe less recoil?Laugh2

.22 mag hits harder..... To about 50y and than its velocity drops like crazy and there matched. .22 mag is a good round but to say ur out performs the .17 hmr is false.

Wind drift, @ 200y the .22wmr is more affected than a .17 simply due to velocity. The slower round is pushed around by the wind longer.

I consider max effective range of a bullet the distance Untill it slows to the sound wall. 1200fps. The .22 WMR - 150y. .17 HMR - 300y.

Both kick ass on gophers regardless.

A 33gr WMR has more energy at 100yds than a .17HMR 17gr. 164ft.lbs. vs 136. After that the .17 wins.

The 15.5gr stuff I have seen and used is non-toxic(lead free) that might have something to do with it. Not sure though

Well I guess that has some merrit for those that are concerned with lead. It's never bothered me and likely why I never thought of that.

I've shot hundreds of rounds of the Winchester 17hmr in my Savage and never once has any of the above happened. FWIW YMMV.

Exactly this. From what I understand anyways, Hornady or CCI load all the .17hmr cartridges anyways. It's all just re-branded. Just what I heard though.

I know my 93R17FVSS has NEVER had a problem with split necks and the like. And I only run the "Winchester" shells, because that's what's available to me for the least cost. I prefer the 20gr pills though, that may have something to do with it.
