As my interest in it increases, I have been reading more and more about the Norinco M305. But the icing on the cake occured today when I ran into this video made by an Australian owner:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_eEW0WRi3g

Now that I've watched both parts, I'm even more iterested in the M305 and just a bit envious of its owners.

I was impressed with the way he handled the firearm in general, as well as the way he adeptly disassembled and reassembled it with ease. And when he notices some shortcoming in something he's done, he does not hesitate to admit that rather than attempt to gloss it over with some BS.

During the video's follow-up part 2, the young man shows quite well what he and his scoped M305 are capable of doing when he fires from prone and kneeling positions. (Those shoes have just got to go, though.)

In short, watching those two videos made me want to handle and fire an M305 for myself. The videos were probably intended as merely informational rather than promotional, but the affect they had on me was most certainly the latter.

I have also been considering a mini 14, but the M305's bang for the buck is attractive. A new stainless mini by itself is going to cost pretty close to what an M305 will cost including probably 500 rounds or more of surplus ammo. It'll take me quite some time to go through even 500 rounds (unless the urge to keep loading and pulling the trigger becomes overpowering, that is).

BTW, I really like the suppressor that is being used in those videos and I wish we Canadians were afforded the same opportunity to protect our ears and limit the noise level in the nearby environment. I don't think anyone could say that that firearm is anywhere near "silent" with the silencer, but the rifle's report is appreciably diminished and to me this would make the shooting experience much more pleasant. (I would like to know how the loudness of the M305's suppressed report compares to that of say a 10/22 without any sound suppression. If the 305 is still louder than the 10/22, once again with feeling, what's the point of the anti-suppressor law?)

I agree, that is a good video. Made me want to get an M305....I haven't yet, but that's a funding issue.

Also, he's from New Zealand, they aren't allowed to have scary semi-auto's in Australia. If he was in Australia, he'd be making a video of his airsoft M14. Oh wait, they banned airsoft too.

As a final note, the urge to keep loading and pulling the trigger is always overpowering!

I have spent years admiring the M14 rifle. I hope you too get the chance to enjoy it as much as I have. I have met some great people along the way. There is no better forum to begin your understanding. Keep in mind, this is Canada's rifle, keep it tuned, keep it clean and keep it ready. Cheers and welcome!

I thought exactly the same thing. I bought an M14 because of his video.

One thing I would have liked to see are accuracy tests with the scope mount tightened down. He notes at the end of the video that his scope mount was loose after he shot his groups.

On another note, I put a scope on mine today for the first time and shot 100 grain half-jacketed bullets at pop cans at 100 meters. I'd never shot a (properly zeroed) scoped centerfire before. Simply incredible!

Shooting lighter boolits from the M14 is a freakin' blast! It truly adds a pile of fun because there hardly is any recoil. My wife likes that part. She just destroys clay birds at 100m with my M14 and 125 gr Speer TNT .30 cal boolits!

Have at 'er!! :D

Cheers,
Barney

Thanks for all the comments, guys. Two of them really caught my attention.

gyppo, I have two questions about what you've said above. First, is that ammo commerically available, or did you load it yourself? Second, did the rifle cycle properly (reload itself) with that light bullet, or did you have to manually operate the slide after each shot?

Barney, I would also like my wife to be happy firing whatever long gun I buy, so I'm encouraged by what you've said about your wife liking the M305's light recoil with the 125 gr "boolits". I have the same questions for you that I did gyppo. Is the ammo you described commercially available or did you load it yourself? Did the rifle cycle properly?

Thanks for the information.

To make a rifle attractive to young people it has to be cheap and available in CoD, so I wouldn't worry because it meets the criteria

Well... I got back from the range about 3 hours ago........and Im still laughing.
Fine, I sent 60 bucks down range with the 305. I was there for 4 hours,in my book thats cheaper than a movie and dinner for the wife. The thing is a real blast and its got a good solid feel to it,Ive never shot with a scope before but Im happy with a 4 inch group at 200mtrs (there were many, many 8,10 12 18 inch groups as well + some that were in the 20 meter group :) ) Ran out of ammo so out comes the old SKS and a couple hundred through that ,Cost me probably half as much as the 305.
Guess im saying the 305 is a deal and not too expensive to feed, about 50cents a bang surplus. Thank God were not allowed to own LAWS or MILANS they would hurt at feeding time

Roll on next thursday.....I got some cleaning to do.......
PLAY SAFE

Thankyou very much, but like I said there was a long painful build up to it LOL
See if I can do it again next week. On the reloading topic Im more interested in finding "the round" for this weapon. At 50cents a bang with surplus its still pretty cheap when you look at what you can pay for top range rounds.

You should have seen my twenty meter group LOL

you'd be suprised how many americans i talk to that think theres a bridge between NZ and Aus

WAIT

What?? *Looks at a globe*

I did not get that memo!

Back on topic:

The M14/305 is getting to be very appealing for me too. I might get rid of my Savage Axis for one of these.

How to make an M14 attractive to newbies, by Plink.

Step 1: go to range
Step 2: give rifle to newbie (after appropriate function and safety briefings)
Step 3: watch #### eating grin form on newbies face

That is all.
